Navy deployed gifts have been a part of the Klamath Falls community since World War II. The gift tradition began with Commander William J. Purdy, who served in the Pacific Theater during WWII and donated his uniform and other military memorabilia to the town in 1946. From then on, Navy sailors would bring back items they had collected while stationed in Hawaii or Japan- some even taking their entire kit along! The Klamath Falls Historical Society has numerous artifacts from before WWII that include small packets of cigarettes (common among naval service personnel) and beer cans filled with Ningbo cigarettes (a popular brand at the time). During the war years, local businesses made thousands of dollars selling navy souvenirs such as hats and aprons. After the war ended, many GI’s returned home to find their homes were now decorated with navy memorabilia from wherever they had served. In 1962, Rear Admiral Clarence Dillingham, commanding officer of Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego County, CA., donated several hundred pieces of Navy equipment including destroyer escorts and an amphibious assault ship to Klamath Falls. This was followed by donations from various navy officers and seamen over the years- most notably Commodore Harry Fenton who gifted a large collection of uniforms and insignia to the town in 1984. Today, there is a large navy presence throughout Oregon due to both our military veterans and active duty sailors/commanders stationed throughout our state. It is not only great for community morale but also helps support Oregon's economy as we see more visitors coming through our city than ever before!
