Klamath Falls, Oregon is a town in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of the Klamath River. The first people to settle in what is now Klamath Falls were farmers who came from northwestern British Columbia in 1847. They lost interest in agriculture after they discovered gold near Bend and moved on to other ventures. In 1870, John Webber and his brothers built a mill on the south side of the river at what is now known as Webber Dam. The mill was used for flour, feedstock for tanning operations, and power for production of tools and machinery. In 1916, Julius Rosenwald donated land upstream from Webber Dam for development into an agricultural community called Rosenwald Rapids. By 1920, most of the residents had left for various reasons such as wars or economic depression. In 1984 NEP sold its share in Northwest Electric Power Company to Western Electric Corporation (WE) which dismantled all but one of NEP's mills. Klamath Falls, Oregon is a town in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first European to visit the area now known as Klamath Falls was Jedediah Smith in 1827. He named it Butte after his trusty pack horse, Bute. In 1862, Pekin and his party of miners struck gold at what is now called Gold Hill and soon began building a cabin thereon that became known as Mount Yarrow (later renamed Klamath). A post office called Klamath Falls was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it closed in 1898. The community's name comes from early settler George Armstrong Cundiff's observation that "a falls would be an apt name for such a place." The first school in the town was built on the site of today's Community High School in 1907. In 1916 Oregon State Route 26 was designated through the center of town; this route later became I-5 Alternate. In 1948 Klamath Falls absorbed nearby Happy Valley when its own county was created from parts of Multnomah and Polk Counties
