A group of citizens led by Mayor Dick Sears lobbied unsuccessfully for a bypass route through downtown that would have allowed traffic to flow unimpeded through the heart of town. Klamath Falls, Oregon is a small town located in the Klamath Mountains of eastern Oregon. The community was founded in 1887 by C.W. Post and his wife, Nancy. The Post family ranched the land that now makes up Klamath Falls until 1954. After that, the community grew slowly but steadily as businesses established themselves and people acquired homes and children began to attend schools in the area. In 1970, Klamath Falls became an incorporated city under state law; it has since grown into a thriving metropolis with a population of over 10,000 residents. The history of Klamath Falls can be traced back to 1847 when Lieutenant John Capps arrived in what is today Klamath Falls to surveyed the area for fur-traders looking for new ground to hunt bear and other animals on the Oregon Trail. By 1850, there were at least six families living hereabouts: Post, Whiteaker, Fenton, Barker, Rankin and Smith. By 1861 there were twelve families residing hereabouts; four of these had removed from nearby Umpqua River valley to make their own place among these mountainside foothills: Waddell (now miles away), Hitchcock (now part of Butte), Randall (now an importer/exporter) and Yount (later mayor). In 1887 Post moved his family from Umpqua River Valley to what is now Klamath Falls after purchasing 4 acres near present day Main Street from William Houghton Sr. He named his new settlement after his father-in-law’s birthplace—the falls of Vail—in Scotland where he had been born some years earlier while serving as acting captain aboard HMS Discovery during Captain Canning’s first Voyage around North Americaeddyigh 1789-90AHDG.. In 1890 Captain George Vancouver explored Lake George National Park which lay beyond Vail Pass & Included parts of what are now central Oregon & northwestern California; he named & chartered HMS Erebus which moored at Vail river mouth just below present day Lower Vail village site east side Dry Creek about 2 miles northwest corner Lower Tehama County line From then on all exploration was done under auspices of United States Government thru purchase by USUCLA for use as Aromatherapy Laboratory
The Klamath Falls Massacre took place on July 25, 1859, when a group of Native Americans killed four white men and wounding two others at the settlement of Klamath Falls. The massacre was retribution for the deaths of three other people at the hands of United States soldiers in December 1858.
