Klamath Falls, Oregon is a small town in the Klamath Mountains of central Oregon. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It lies on U.S. Route 97, about two miles east of the confluence of the Klamath and Columbia Rivers and less than a mile from Interstate 5. The town began as an agricultural community in 1868 when Jedediah Smith, surveyor for the Cascades Railroad, came through on his way to supply General William Tecumseh Sherman with goods for his march against Confederate forces in 1871. A mill was built soon after and became known as the "Iron Mill". The mill closed in 1902 but continued to be used as a store until 1978. The first post office opened in 1865 and served residents of what is now Klamath Falls until 1887; it was moved to its present location near downtown in 1886. The first school was called simply " Upper Klamath" but changed its name to Klamath Falls due to local opposition to using a word that might suggest Indian origin (the river's course had been used by early explorers). In 1923, the school board changed its name also to honor Mrs. Bessie Morse who donated land for a new high school which opened in 1927; it remains one of Klamath Falls' most important institutions today. In 1938, during World War II, many members of the military lived or worked temporarily in nearby McClellan Air Force Base before being stationed elsewhere; this led to increased commercial activity around town and made it easier for people living there not onlyto purchase food but also services such as plumbing and lawn care; these days many businesses are located just north of downtown along US 97 where most traffic stops are found In 1969-1970 when Expo '70 took place locally much attention was paid to art displays throughout town including several large mural installations including one by Don Nehlen which can be seen from I-5 southbound Exit 104 . Unfortunately damage caused by fire caused most murals within city limits during that time period however some beautiful originals have since been restored/repainted including one featuring dancers from Northwest Dance Group
