Klamath Falls, Oregon is a city in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Klamath County. The name of the town comes from nearby Mount Adams and falls into the local pronunciation of "k-l-a-m-a-t-h" or "kuhlan". The first post office in town was opened on January 10, 1879. The city was founded by brothers John and Jacob Hagerty on land they acquired from the Yurok Tribe in 1876. They named their new settlement after Mount Adams, which they had seen from their farmstead on Siuslaw Creek. In 1888, when Klamath Falls became part of Portland, Maine as part of that city's annexation by Portland proper, it became necessary for Portland to provide an official name for its newest municipality since there were no initial references tosuch a community anywhere within its borders. So Portland chose Klamath Falls over suggestions such as "Oregon City", "Mt Hood City", and even "Portland Landing". After years of debate among various officials involved with establishing municipal boundaries within what is nowPortland proper (including changes to streets' names), it was finally decided upon on November 8, 1915 that the original name forthe new municipality - Klamath Falls - would be used throughout its entire area including annexations subsequent thereto by other municipalities including Hillsboro and Beaverton (now Beaverton). Initially located near present day Interstate 5 southbound exit 20A off I‑5 between Vale Boulevard and Scott Road east of downtown Portland; later moving eastward along I‑5 until it reached SW Park Avenue in Vancouver; then northward until reaching NW Everett Street whereupon it terminated at SW Broadway which forms the border between Vancouver and Portland Proper; this arrangement lasted until 1937 when parts of Vancouver annexed by Portland Proper while still remaining under control of Klamath Falls; thereafter all annexations took place subject only to the provisions set forth hereinabove with one exception which concerned NE Everett Street which remained under total control of PDX until 1959 when it fell withinsnarling jurisdiction of both Vancouver andPDX following a boundary change incidentuated in that year's annexationof SE Hawthorne Boulevard by Hillsboro
