Hillsboro, Oregon is a city of about 110,000 people located in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is the county seat of Clackamas County. The population was 103,814 at the 2010 census. Hillsboro is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Fremont metropolitan area and its economy is based on services and trade. Oregon's first post office was established in 1856 in what is now Hillsboro; it moved to its current location in 1868 after being founded by Humboldt County settlers on land owned by General George Armstrong Custer. In 1902, Hillsboro became a town when it separated from Humboldt County. The growth of Portland's streetcar system allowed for increased development along Northwest Fourth Avenue between 1892 and 1904 known as "The Commercial Corridor." This area was home to many small businesses that were displaced when Portland annexed nearby hills in 1905 including Hillside Drug Company, which occupied space vacated by the successful store built by David Lipscomb for $5,000 (later worth more than $100 million). In 1914, Hillsboro voters passed a referendum passing an ordinance establishing zoning regulations that limited downtown business to single occupancy with no more than ten stories; this prohibition lasted until 1993 when it was amended to allow high rises up to 50 stories within downtown limits only if they were developed through public-private partnerships overseen by an Independent Review Board composed of citizens appointed by Mayor Sam Adams and City Council members (the same body that created today's zoning authority). The first high rise built in Hillsborough since then has been the Benaroya Place tower which stands at 555 feet (179 meters) tall, surpassing any other building commissioned or approved during that time period except for one: Aldermen John Ashcroft and Lloyd Doggett’s original vision for MAX Station – which never came to fruition due to economic reasons – would have tallest structure in Multnomah County had it been approved instead. Hillsboro, Oregon is a small town in the Wasco County area ofOregon. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the banks of the Willamette River and is bounded to the north by Interstate 5, to the east by U.S. Route 97, to the south by Oregon State Route 20 and to the west by Oregon Route 205. Hillsboro was founded in 1887 as a small agricultural village on what is now Hillsboro Boulevard in what was then Deschutes County. It grew rapidly during World War II when it became an important military airbase for United States forces in Southeast Asia. After hostilities ended, Hillsboro declined slowly through the 1990s and 2000s as its economy shifted from agriculture to services and tourism. In 2006, however, it resumed growth with construction of a new shopping mall, centered around I-5 and US-97K; this has helped revived portions of downtown that had been abandoned since before Hillsboro's heyday as a commercial center.
Oregon became a U.S. state on February 14, 1859. The original inhabitants of the area that would become Hillsboro were the Yurok and Klamath tribes. On December 8, 1850, Oregon Territorial Legislature passed Resolution No. 5 in reference to the proposed Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, which called for donations of land in central Oregon to be set aside for the benefit of Indians who could not own land elsewhere within the United States due to their reservations or Treaty rights. On October 17, 1851, a group led by James Henson arrived at the mouth of Hood River from California with stores and tools intended to settle in what is now Hillsboro. The first white people living in what is now Hillsboro were prospectors John Evans and his son-in-law Samuel Holmes who builtthe first cabin on East Main Street in 1851. The town was platted on June 10, 1852 by William Jessup with about 40 acres (16 ha) of land purchased from Dolphus Willamette along Hood River Road east of present day Hillsboro Cemetery and south of present day Portland Avenue. The town name may have been derived from an early settler's Indian name or another term related to aboriginal culture such as "Hillsborough." The first post office opened in Hillsboro on July 4, 1853; it was closed on November 15th due to lack of mail traffic and reopened on December 1st under the name "Hood River Post Office." In 1861, when Oregon became a state bird it was given its current name--Hillsboro Sparrows--in commemoration of this event. In 1865–1866 Governor David Rose granted US$50 worth of free land at Happy Valley near present day doorsteps of Portland State University as part as part donation for creating a college campus there; this site became known as 'Rose Park'. In 1888 developer George Wickersham donated 0 acre (0 ha) southeast corner lot adjacent NW Third Avenue / SE Hawthorne Boulevard for use as a Columbarium/Museum building; this building served as home until 1911 when it burned down during an earthquake which destroyed much nearby infrastructure including streetcar lines running parallel NE 3rd Avenue / SE Hawthorne Boulevard
