Hillsboro is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Willamette River. The population was 54,546 at the 2010 census, making Hillsboro the most populous city in Oregon and the third most populous city in Multnomah County. The first European settlers arrived in 1845 and built a cabin on what is now Fort Vancouver Island near present-day Hillsboro. In 1847, John Cranch founded a trading post at what is now downtown Hillsboro after moving from his home near Bend,Oregon during the early years of Oregon's incorporation as a state. By 1850, Portland had become too expensive to maintain and many businesses closed down around that time; however, Hillcrest land owner James McMillin decided to open up more space for trade by purchasing two adjacent parcels of land east of Mt Hood which he named "Hillsboro" because it was seen as being high enough for distant hills to be visible from his property. On July 20th, 1851 McMillin hosted an Independence Day celebration with singing and dancing by people from all over town when he announced that he had purchased 400 acres (160 hectares) along the riverbank between Hecla and Beaver Dam upstream from modern day Hillsboro for $6 per acre ($/km2). The site would eventually become downtown Hillsboro after McMillin's purchase was approved by both Portland City Council and King County Commissioners on February 19th, 1852 despite objections from some who felt that this would result in importing Native Americans into their midst - an issue which again flared up during World War II when Japanese-Americans were brought into town under false pretenses as part of Operation Downfall (1944), leading to accusations of racism against those who supported them. In 1855–1856 developer Gideon Beman laid out streetscape plans for what would become downtown including Market Street (), Congress Avenue (), First Avenue (), Fourth Avenue () (later renamed Foster Lane ()) (); Moody Street (); Pioneer Place (); Everett Square (); Hawthorne Boulevard (); Fillmore Road ()); Bellingham Way (). This plan included trees lining each street corner with arborvitae along sidewalks providing shade while public baths were constructed across various blocks off Main Street (). A new school was built nearby on Eighth Street (). In 1860s Ayer vacuum cleaner factory lot became available just south of today's University District complex; development started there but halted due lack of money until 1962 when progress continued northward towards University Circle(). Downtown business districts emerged along Swan Creek (now SW Thurston St.) south of First Ave., northeast along SE Stark St., northwest along NE Clackamas St., southwest along S Broadway Blvd., southeast along SW Northgate Ave., northwest along Waverly Plz., and finally northeast across Interstate 5 onto speculators' Row where much later office buildings developed such as The old American West Building (& Tower) & Banknorth Plaza (& Tower)
