Hillsboro is an unincorporated community in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. It is located on the north side of the Willamette River east of Hillsboro Lake. The population was 3,660 at the 2010 census. The first reference to a town called Hillsboro appears in a journal written by George Washington in 1792. At that time, the area now known as Hillsboro was part of what was then called Columbia County. In 1847, King George III granted land to John Prentice and others for the purpose of founding a town named after him – Prenticeville. However, noxious gas readings from nearby mines led to the abandonment of Prenticeville and its replacement by Hillsboro in 1849. In 1851, commissioners voted to name the new town "Hillsborough" in honor of General William Troup who had served with distinction during the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Oregon Territory. The colony failed to take off and died within two years; however, it left behind a lasting legacy in Hillsborough – one street still bears his name today (Troup Drive). During World War II, Hillsboro played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location near Portland and its proximity to military installations around the region. After hostilities stopped in 1945, much of the plant's infrastructure still remains active including parts of which are open to visitors today. In 1907, when American Bridge Company built its first major bridge across the Willamette River at Tigard, they named their new crossing "John Bidwell Bridge" in honor of their founder and namesake. This act helped solidify Hillsborough's place withinPortland'a commercial center during this time period; business owners referred to their township simply as "Hillsborough."
