Hillsboro, Oregon is a town located in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. Hillsboro was founded on May 5, 1875 by the Hartsfield family. The town became a city on December 4, 1907 and was renamed Hillsboro City after then-mayor John C. Hills. The first post office in Hillsboro opened on February 14, 1876. The town's first mayor was William Gentry Hill and the first clerk of court was Julius Purdy. In 1907, the city became a statehood dependency of Portland and its name changed to Hillsboro City again. The population of Hillsboro City reached 30,000 in 1930; however, it declined to 10,000 by 1940 due to World War II and later growth in Portland. In 1970s and 1980s there were efforts to re-establish a downtown core for the city but these fell through because of economic difficulties brought about by the rise of Portland suburbs outside of the city limits
On July 4, 1872, the first post office in Hillsboro was established. On October 15 of that year, the Oregon General Assembly approved a bill creating the city of Hillsboro. The City Council voted to name the city after military general George Washington Hill.
