The Oregon National Guard was organized on July 1, 1907. The unit was named the 9th Infantry Regiment and activated at Pendleton, Oregon. The regiment served in the Spanish-American War as part of the 3rd Infantry Brigade of the 7th Infantry Division under General John J. Pershing. In 1916, Oregon became a state and the regiment was reorganized as a militia unit with headquarters at Portland.
