Mr. Kapp retired from his business after more than 50 years in 1984 and Peggy continued to run the business until her death in 2001. By then, the store had been sold to two other owners who operated it for about 10 years before it closed down in 2009 due to lack of customers.

The town was named for the happy valley where they found some of their first crops. The population of Happy Valley was 597 as of 2010. The town began to grow rapidly after it was designated as the site for the new Portland General Depot in 1855. It soon became known for its flourishing agricultural economy which contributed to its nickname "the breadbasket of Oregon." The townsfolk erected a large wooden fence around their land to keep out overbearing cattle ranchers, and they also built a few schools and churches in order to provide education and support services for their residents. In 1885, Happy Valley joined the city of Portland as part of a municipal merger that saw other smaller communities within Portland's boundaries merge into larger districts. From then on, Happy Valley enjoyed some high-quality public services such as libraries, sewage systems, fire protection, and even a water supply system that allowed it to be twinned with other cities in various parts of the United States. By 1921, however, housing prices had increased so much inPortland that many people chose to move away from Happy Valley altogether. Despite this decline in popularity over time, there are still many resident who live within commuting distance from the town center through local roads or railways
