Happy Valley, Oregon is an unincorporated community located in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The community was founded in 1907 by the Happy Valley Coal Co. as a coal mine and Railroad town. It served as a temporary stop on the Eastern Oregon Railway until it was re-routed to Hood River in 1908. The town prospered as a small mining and logging center during the early 20th century and experienced rapid growth after World War II when the region became known for its cornucopia of post-war infrastructure projects. By 1990, however, the town's population had fallen to fewer than 100 residents and it ceased to exist as an official municipality designation. Happy Valley has been mentioned in various accounts of American history since at least 1855, when Jedediah Smith passed through on his way from Fort Hall to explore the Columbia Plateau. In 1862, Captain Folsom of Company K of Umatilla Scouts wrote about "a beautiful valley" on his return trip from Fort Hall into what is now Wasco County. A guidebookpublished in 1913 by John Wesley Powell described Happy Valley as follows: "The Happy Valley [mining] outfit[s] were established some time ago near present day HappyValley Junction where several shafts are sunk; they are situated about three miles due east of this junction."
