Gresham, Oregon was founded in 1847 by John C. Gresham and his brother-in-law, James Shields. The town currently occupies a location near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. It was named for George Washington Gresham, an American patriot and banker who aided the British during the War of 1812. The early pioneers of Gresham were farmers and their families. A millrace ran through the center of town and water mills were built for grinding flour, lumber, salt, cheese and other goods. By 1870, Gresham had a population of 350 people; it had also developed into a dry goods store, post office and railroad junction. In 1892, Gresham became part of the newly created city of Portland when that city was established along the then existing river routes connecting Portland with Seattle and points south. In 1912, somegrowth occurred in Gresham as well when two new churches were built: First Presbyterian (1892) and Methodist Episcopal (1912). However, World War I caused many businesses to close; this declined after 1919 whenPortland became an all-city municipality under state government control following Decatur County's secession from Oregon. Although much growth occurred subsequently in retail stores as well as residential development in downtown areas such as Northgate Park (now known as Union Station), most facets of Gresham's commercial life remain unchanged from its founding until today.
