Gresham and named for his father-in-law, James Gresham. The Gresham Coffee Company was established in 1906 and became known for its gourmet coffee products. The company merged with two other companies to form the Giant Coffee Company in 1938. The giant coffee company ceased operations in 1990 but the legacy of their gourmet coffee products remains today.

By 1830, there were several coffeehouses in Gresham. In 1851, a cafe was opened by Nicholas Biddle on Washington Street. In 1860, a second cafe was opened on State Street. In 1862, Gresham had its first grocery store and the first library in Oregon. In 1865, a third cafe was opened on Summit Avenue. By 1870, there were six cafes in Gresham with a population of about 100 people. The last café closed down in 1875 due to financial difficulties.

Manufacturing took off during World War II with the production of munitions, tires and agricultural products such as fruits, grains and vegetables. After the war ended there was a rapid decline in business until the 1990s when new services such as online retail began to grow; this has led to an increase in housing development around town which has helped preserve much of its historic architecture including many Victorian homes dating back to1890. During most of its history Gresham has been known as a bedroom community for Portland's wealthier citizens but over recent years it has become home to more lower-income residents who have begun moving into properties near downtown since property values have increased there too. It has been reported that Gresham may be named for one of its early settlers, George Washington Gresham. The first European to visit what is now Gresham was Juan Rodríguez de Mena, who explored the area in 1597 on behalf of Spanish missionaries. A post office called Gresham was established in 1855, and remained open until 1959. In 1853, John C Jesup founded a ferry landing on the Willamette River between modern day Salem and Eugene before his wagon train arrived from Missouri en route to California. He named his landing "Gresham" after his parents' home town of Grosse Pointe (now Escanaba). In 1861–1862, during the American Civil War, General Silliman's army invaded northern Oregon and encountered resistance from local Native Americans at Battle of Slough Creek; as a result, Major General William T Sherman's forces burned most if not allof Grosse Pointe on July 5th 1863; this event is generally recognized as starting the end of slavery in Oregon west of The Columbia River. Over time many other towns were founded around or near Grosse Pointe including: Corvallis (1902), Hillsboro (1910), Beaverton (1923), McMinnville (1929), Tigard (1934) and Cornelius (1945). After World War II many companies such as Boeing Aviation moved their plants throughout the country but some continued operations until they leftOregon altogether such as Deere & Co.; these plants are now located outsidePortland within Multnomah County. A large part of downtown Portland was destroyed by a fire on May 24th 1946 which started when sparks from an electrician working inside an apartment building set off a power line running through downtown; this event is also generally acknowledged as startiningthe development activity along NW 12th Ave which later would become knownas Pioneer Square today Many people were displaced during both fires with many moving into neighborhoods near South Waterfront Park where they soon noticed that there were no schools available so they started school back at their old homesideschools continue up until present day
