The United States army has been present in Gresham, Oregon since 1846 when the first U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized here. The current 1st Infantry Division traces its origins to the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Oregon Volunteer Cavalry Corps, which served in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1865, following the Civil War, Gresham became a city and U.S. Army post garrisoned it until 1898 when all military activities were discontinued in Oregon except for a few brief periods during World War I and World War II. Today, Gresham’s military history is mixed but includes items from both recent wars as well as older conflict examples dating back to 1846. The city’s downtown area contains an impressive number of service facilities associated with both previous armies: an armored cavalry encampment from 1862; a munitions plant from 1903; and now hostels for soldiers on base housing various types of troops including infantry and artillery units while also providing local businesses with access to military tourists who may come through town on their way to visiting other parts of Oregon or Southwest Washington. Among those actively involved in developing Gresham’s Military History Museum are City Manager Rick Rasmussen and Mayor Mike Cavanaugh who have worked together tirelessly towards making this important resource available to everyone interested in learning more about our country’s pastime – soldiering!

The town was founded in 1853 by John Gresham and his family after they arrived from England on a ship called the "Dolphin." Gresham rapidly grew into an important community, becoming known for its production of flour, cattle, lumber, bricks, cheese, eggs and other goods. In 1875, Gresham annexing rural areas to its boundaries; these additions made up what is now eastern Oregon's second largest city. The city gained even more importance during World War II when it became the major port for exports to Japan viasea Cable. After the war ended, Gresham declined slightly in population but continued to grow economically thanks to several key developments:the establishment of millsponsored by local businesses;the construction of Interstate 5;andthe growth of real estate development around it. During recent years however, some large changes have occurred within Greshamtown:in 2008-2009home values decreased as a resultof economic conditions withinOregon.;andin 2013-2014a numberofimportantlocal businesses closed their doors dueto lack Ofopportunitieswithintheeconomy.$
