The Oregon state navy was founded on July 25, 1819 in the town of Grants Pass. The first ship to be launched from the port was the USS Constitution. The navy played an important role during World War II and after the war. It currently has only a small fleet of vessels, but it is still a valuable resource for Oregonians. Grant Pass, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 15,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Multnomah County. Grant Pass and its surrounding communities are located on the Willamette River. Grant Pass started as a small town in 1885 when George Washington Hildebrandt founded the community of Grant Prairie on the site of what is now Grants Pass. The name was changed to Grant City in 1907 after it became part of Multnomah County. The city was renamed again to Grant Pass in 1959 after it became a suburb of Portland. In 1990, the city annexed part of Hood River County and began to use the name Hood River City while also maintaining its own government and police department separate from those of Hood River County. In 2000, all aspects of municipal government were merged into that of Portland with effect from that date; however, for statistical purposes Grant Pass remains listed as an independent municipality within Multnomah County. According to the US Census Bureau's 2010 census estimate,[1] there were 15,824 people living in Grants Pass metropolitan area (the combined Cowlitz/Hood River Counties). The name "Grant Pass" comes from U.S. Route 97 which passes through town, leading travelers eastward over The Cascades in search of Mount Rainier National Park or westward to Bend on the central rim ofMount Hood National Park. The first Europeans to visit Grant Pass were fur traders who went there in 1825 in search of new routes into Russia and Alaska. soon after they discovered one possible route over The Cascades - traveling down what is now Interstate 5 from Seattle to Portland - they began trading with local tribes for goods and land around hereabouts. In 1847 a group led by David Silliman explored The Cascades region for mineral rights; he named his discovery "Grant's Mountains." By 1850 most of present-day Grant Pass had been surveyed as part of a general survey conducted by USGS officer George Biddle; it was platted as an incorporated town on February 15, 1851 under the name "Oregon City". In 1862 Captain John Wesley Powell became interested in exploring The Cascades region and traveled upriver from Salt Lake City along US 95 until he reached Grants Pass on July 24th – fulfilling his promise made during his trip as governor (1860-1862) of Oregon that he would explore all 4 corners ofthe state before leaving office. On October 12th 1865 when General Alfred Terry marched into Portland looking for General Joseph Wheeler's army retreating toward Salem after being defeated at BattleOfSumner Creek near Ashland, Powell met him at Grant's Station whereuponGeneral Terry ordered him back across THE CAVALIER RIVER TO ORLANDO
On July 1, 1907, Grants Pass became the town of Grants Pass. The name was chosen because it is an Indian word meaning "headwaters." When the first post office was established in Grants Pass on December 17, 1906, it was called Whipple.
