National Guard gifts have been a part of the Grants Pass community for many years. The Grants Pass National Guard has donated items and services to various local organizations, including the Oregon Historical Society. Gifts from the National Guard have helped make Grants Pass a more active and welcoming community. The first national guard gift was given in 1912. At that time, there were only three companies of soldiers in Oregon. The Grant Pass National Guard donated money to build an armory and barracks in downtown Grant Pass. This gift contributed to the growth of Grant Park in downtown Grant City. In 1916, theGrantPassNationalGuard gifted a machine shop and tools to the city of Grants Pass as part of their annual Christmas tree program. This donation helped turn around Grants PASS economy after World War I hit hardest affecting other parts of Oregon. In 1931,theGrantPassNationalGuard gifted a library card book collection to the City Library in Grants Pass as part of their campaign for world peace through education programs. This donation helped support importanteducational opportunities for citizens inGrantsPass during the early 1930s when books were not as easily available as they are now. In 1955,theGrantpassNationalGuard gifted an ambulance to town hall for use by local law enforcement officers during emergencies or special events such as fairs or funerals.This gift provided necessarymedical assistance during emergency situations in our community which is still seen today onoccasions like these! It is also known that this ambulance was used extensivelyduring World War II when over 100 patients were brought into town hall using this vehicle! Today, through donations and services from members of theGrantpassNationalGuard, we continueto provide needed support services to our community while celebrating its history!

The National Guard has been in existence since 1792, when the Second Continental Congress passed an act authorizing a standing army during times of war. The first units were raised in New York and Pennsylvania in 1795. In 1812, Massachusetts organized its own unit, followed by Rhode Island in 1813. The first Guardsman served with distinction under General George Washington throughout the Revolutionary War and into the American Civil War. A total of 54,000 men served in Federal service from 1792-1865; however, only 10% were ever called up for service during any one year. On July 15th 1862, Abraham Lincoln called up all volunteer regiments not subject to state or federal jurisdiction to serve in Confederate service as part of Union forces against Southern aggression In 1934, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed legislation which authorized an increased number of National Guard units for World War II mobilization purposes At present there are over 26 million active duty Guardsmen nationwide

Robinson in 1878 as a trading post on the Astoria River. In 1907, Grant Pass was named one of twenty townships in Clackamas County by then-Governor of Oregon Harlan Ellis.
