In 1945, construction began on what would become known as "the Arches"; this bridge became one of Portland's earliest landmarks when it opened to traffic on November 1, 1945. The town experienced rapid growth following its opening; by 1955, there were more than 2,000 residents living in Grant Pass alone. By 1970, total population had passed 5,000; by 2000, it had grown to 10,700 people. In 1898, two brothers named Harry and Wilfred Sell were granted title to 640 acres (248 ha) east of present-day Grant Pass along Siuslaw River opposite what is now known as Interstate 5W In 1916 local entrepreneur Atherton Bassett created a meatpacking business which would become one of Oregon's largest employers until it closed its doors in 1978; Grant Pass residents frequently attended popular Bassett concerts at nearby McClellan Stadium during this time period.
