Grants Pass, Oregon is home to a rich military history that dates back over sixty years. The city was first named after General George Crook, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as the United States Commissioner of Indian Affairs. In 1885, General John C. Frémont arrived in Grants Pass and began developing what would become an important military presence in the area. He established a post on the banks of the Willamette River, which he called Fort \Vancouver. The fort played an important role during the American Civil War, helping to support General Fremont's effort to retake California from Mexico. After the war, Fort Vancouver was used as a training ground for new officers and soldiers. It also served as a storage facility for ammunition and supplies until it was decommissioned in 1906. However, it wasn't until 1916 that Grant's Pass became officially known as "Grant's Pass Military Residence." That year, Major General Halsey Cooke made his permanent home here while stationed at Camp Hood in southeastern Oregon. Over time, other generals have also visited or resided here including Lieutenant General Omar Bradley and General James Mattis during their campaigns against ISIS and Taliban respectively. Today,Fort Vancouver is still a popular tourist destination due to its historical significance and reconstructed cabin rentals available onsite. Additionally, there are several museums located within walking distance of both the fort AND Grant's Pass City Hall complex (which has been preserved as part of downtown). Overall, Grants Pass has long been an important stop on Route 1 – hosting various events such as rodeos & concerts along with military exhibits & activities throughout the year!

USR built what is now Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Grants Pass to serve as their corporate headquarters until their closure in 2000. In 1937, Nelsons Brewery bought USR's assets for $1 million (). Today, Pioneer Courthouse Square houses many businesses including Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited (), Portland State University (), Washington County government office buildings (), The Rivers Edge Casino () – home of the largest blackjack machine in North America () –and several bars/resorts including Ponderosa Lodge Resort & Casino (). Today's economy depends largely upon agriculture due to rainfall patterns that vary greatly from year to year (); consequently, Grants PASS has been nicknamed "The Valley of Gold" because much gold has been found hereabouts during recent decades (). Many small farmers have made a significant impact on local culture through arts and crafts industries (), along with various hospitality services such as bed & breakfasts., restaurants., gift shops., admissions offices., camel tours., waterfalls,, golf courses., etc.; there are also numerous professional sports teams based locally (e.g.–the Portland Timbers soccer team) as well as several colleges/universities located nearby (Oregon Health & Science University).
