Grant Pass, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley, located about an hour and a half southeast of Portland. It was founded in 1884 by businessmen Alfred P. Grant and Lewis Hillman, who named it after John C. Fremont, the first U.S. Territorial Governor of Oregon. The town quickly became known as the "Gourmet Coffee Capital of the World". In 1933, coffee entrepreneur Harry Jaffe moved to Grants Pass from Seattle and opened his first roastery/tasting room there. Jaffe's taste for quality Turkish coffee allowed him to become one of the most significant forces behind developing modern roasting techniques in Oregon and across North America. He also developed a line of baking powder-based coffees that became very popular among Northwest farmers and their families during the 1930s and 1940s. The popularity of Grants Pass coffee continued through the 1970s when other areas in Oregon began to gain attention for their excellent beans (including Hillsboro), but until recently it has been largely unknown outside ofOregon itself how well-known this particular region's coffee is globally). Roosevelt's executive order known as internment camps (later called concentration camps). Afterward, much reconstruction took place in Grant Pass thanks to generous donations from people throughout the region including General Electric chairman James J Reynolds III who opened up Oneida Lake for swimming and fishing while also donating land for agricultural use which led to grants being given out for local development projects such as schools, churches and hospitals. Today's economy primarily revolves around tourism with various attractions like waterfalls and historic buildings available within easy driving distance from Grants Pass proper such as Bendigo National Historical Park or Crater Lake National Park
