Grant Pass, Oregon is a town in Umatilla County, Oregon, United States. The population was 8,827 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Umatilla County. The area now known as Grant Pass was first settled by parties of fur traders in 1811-13 after rafting down the Willamette River from Vancouver Island. The name "Grant" likely derived from one of these traders, John Grant. In 1821, Brigham Young and his followers founded the settlement of Salt Lake City on this site. In 1825, President James K. Polk sent for settlers to establish a new county in eastern Oregon and named it Umatilla County after Captain George Morrison's exploratory journey overland to that point in 1824-25. Grants Pass lay within this new county until it was created as an independent township within Umatilla County on February 14, 1850. Grant Pass had a post office from 1865 until 1907; during that time it served as the primary shipping point between Portland and California via the Willamette River Valley and was also used by travelers heading eastward along Interstate 5 towards points north and west ofPortland including Salem and Eugene. In 1987, construction began on what would become Grant Park adjacent to downtown Grant Pass; when completed in 1991, it became one of the largest urban park systems in Western North America with more than 6 million square feet (500 hectares) of forestry, open space and retail acreage covering all or part of nine counties including Douglas (the city proper), Laney (Lemon Grove), Andale (Andover), Coeur d'Alene (Coeur d'Alene), Yakima (Yakima Falls), Cascades National Park
