The navy has a long and storied history in Gladstone, Oregon. The first naval base on the Pacific Northwest was established here in 1881, and the town's Naval Ammunition Depot continued to be used as a military facility until 1977. Today, the depot is home to the Gladstone Historical Museum, which features exhibits about navy life in Oregon and around the world. The navy played an important role in Oregon during World War II. In 1941, it donated 4 ships to help port Portland for troops fighting on the front lines. The USS Enterprise (CV-6) served asPortland's only warship until 1945. The USS Tacoma (LCS-3) also served in Oregon during World War II; she was decommissioned in 1951 but reactivated again in 1974 and remains active today. In addition to its contributions to Oregon’s wartime effort, the navy has also long been associated with Gladstone dating back to its early days as a settlement onModoc Creek. In 1875, Captain John Cranch ofthe United States Navy located land hereabouts for sale; he named his new possession "Gladstone" after his old command ship USS Constitution (1801-1803). The first permanent residents of Gladstone were white traders who came from nearby stakeout villages such as North Bend and Corvallis; they began construction of their homes near what is now downtown Gladstone around 1876. Shipbuilding activity increased rapidly following America’s entry into World War I; by 1919, there were twenty-four commercial vessels registered at Gladstone Naval Yard—twenty-six more than at any other waterfront city on Puget Sound! By 1942, thanks largely to combat experience gained during World War II, Portland had replaced Seattle as the leading naval center of Western Washington—a position that would be held through most of the Cold War years. Gladstone, Oregon is a small town in the Klamath Mountains of central Oregon. It was founded in 1877 by George Gladstone and his wife, Chloe. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is located on the banks of the Klamath River. The town is named for Sir John A. Macdonald, who served as Prime Minister of Canada from 1867 to 1874 and as Governor-General of Canada from 1881 to 1886. Gladstone is also home to Mount Hood National Park and the adjacent Mount Shasta National Monument. Gladstone has a rich history that can be traced back to its incorporation into the United States in 1863 as an independent township under contract with the U.S. Department of War (DoW). As part of this process, it became one of only two townships in Oregon designated as "military posts." In 1865, when General Ulysses S. Grant took command of DoW's Western Campaign against Mexican forces invading California, he decided that Gladstone would be his headquarters near Butte Creek east of Stocktonville on the Klamath River. In 1870, when Grant shifted his headquarters westward along the riverbank to Fort Crittenden at present-day Boise City, Gladstone became DoW's largest post south of Vancouver Island and one of its most important military installations outside Washington D.C.. After being merged with several other districts within DoW in 1887, Gladstone assumed full local government under a new charter granted by Congress on October 3 that year following ratification by Oregon voters three days later (see History Of TheCity OfGladstonOregon). At first attempts at land purchase had been limited due to tight financial times; however land prices began rapidly escalating during World War I due largely to increased demand from troops stationed at nearby Fort Crittenden and other military facilities throughout central Oregon and western Washington Territory*. With additional land purchases completed over time*, residents quickly erected homes* on tracts originally purchased for lumber or grazing purposes only.* By 1930*, Gladston had become one of eastern Oregon's most populous towns with over 7500 residents* and continued rapid growth until annexed by Portland in 1933.* Development stagnated during WWII as war production relocated eastward† but resumed after hostilities ended†; however housing values plummeted following atomic bombing raids¶ beginning in 1945† which destroyed many buildings*including much business property*in downtown *despite efforts by Mayor Clifford Sprague†to revive development‡

Gladstone was founded in 1878 by James H. Gladstone, a rancher and lumberman from eastern Oregon. The town quickly developed into a agricultural center, with fruit orchards, dairy farms, and grain mills. The town's first post office opened in 1880. Gladstone became a city in 1907, and was renamed Portland in 1912 after Mayor George Morrison of Seattle. The city experienced significant growth during the 1940s and 1950s as the result of the construction of Interstate 5 and the Oregon Railway Commission's "Oregon Beeline" project. The city saw an increase in population to over 100,000 residents by 1970; however, its current population is only around 35,000 people. In recent years, Gladstone has undergone several renovation projects including a new police department and fire hall as well as the installation of new streetlights.
