Gladstone is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The name "Gladstone" was given to the post office by General John A. Slocum on February 17, 1881. Gladstone was founded in 1865 as a small station on the Oregon Central Railroad near present-day Columbia River Crossing. It had no post office until 1888 when it was moved from Linnville to Gladstone in order to be within easy driving distance for farmers and ranchers who grazed their animals on nearby public land. The townsite that would later become Gladstone was platted in 1865 by Elisha Weldon and Wm. Henson. The early settlers were among those who left Linnville after Sherman's march through Oregon during the Civil War (1861-1865). They primarily traveled by wagon train across the Plains of Abraham because railroads did not exist at that time and they needed only three days ride to reachPortland via Elliott Bayou where they could trade goods with Indian traders before continuing their journey eastward overland. In 1872, an entrepreneur named George Bidwell erected a sawmill and grist mill on what is now State Route 97 about four miles south of town; both mills were soon joined by others making wood products such as lumber and puncheons from local timbers including cedar, fir, Douglas fir, hemlock, export mahogany and redwood which were sold throughout Oregon and Northern California markets. In 1875 Josephine Brown married Wm Swartzel who ran one of these mills; she became known as Mrs." Gadsden" because her husband derived his first name from General James Aphis (1800-1868), Colonel of Infantry under Ulysses S Grant during the American civil war (1860-1865). Mrs." Gadsden" also ran a school for girls in downtown Gladstone until 1870 when it closed due to lack of pupils but reopened six months later under new management with increased enrollment due to increased demand for teachers’ services outside of Portland thanks largely to sustainable teacher training programs offered by women’s organizations like Mother Jones’ National Union Cataloguing Scheme Committee (NUCLC) through its predecessor organization Lucy Stone’s Working Women’s Club fraternal society (WWC). With more than 200 members strong at its peak Mrs." Gadsden" helped organize students into oratorical societies which met monthly “to give expression to plans we had formed for literature or other purposes connected therewith,—speaking out upon topics suggested by our Executive Committee or decided upon unanimously by all members present [ofMrs."Gadsden"]—and holding forth upon subjects so important that we thought it right we should have public notice thereof whenever possible … various literary societies having been organized since then are still continued without interruption….To this day there are many good citizens associated with us hereabouts: some seventyeight years ago there were none! 1
