Gladstone was founded in 1887 by John C. Gladstone and his wife, Emma. The town Sitka, Alaska, served as the site of Gladstone's first post office. The Gladstones purchased property in what is now Gladstone in 1892, and built a log cabin which they named "Gladstone." They were the first settlers in the area. In 1903, they moved to their current location on Hwy 97. In 1905, John C. Gladstone became the first mayor of Gladstone. He was instrumental in developing the city into a thriving community with a large population and businesses. In 1909, he donated land to build the present day City Hall Annex building that still stands today. That same year, he also contributed $1 million towards expanding highway 97 into Oregon Territory. John C. Gladstone passed away in 1916 at the age of 80 years old after serving as Mayor for over 30 years! His legacy remains strong throughout Gladstonian history - he was an important figure in developing this important town into one of its finest examples today!

Gladstone, Oregon was founded in 1847 by the father of the present town, Lorenzo Gladstone. The original settlers were mostly Mormon farmers and their families. In 1850, Lorenzo Gladstone secured a grant from the United States government to establish a townsite in what is now Oregon. He named it after his friend and business associate, John A. Macdonald. Gladstone rapidly developed as a small farming community with several stores and a schoolhouse. It grew more important as an agricultural center when railroad transportation became available in the area in the late 19th century. In 1902, Lorenzo Gladstone donated land to build the present town square on which today's buildings stand. The cornerstone for the first courthouse was laid on October 11, 1902. In 1851, James Gladstone, a gold miner and prospector in the area, discovered what would become known as Gladstone Gold Rush. The rush began on December 15 of that year when a group of men from Oregon Territory set out for the mines. Within two weeks, they had found and mined over 1 million ounces of gold. By January 10 of 1852, their party had reached an altitude of 8,000 feet and was able to look down on the rushing water below. They named their discovery after James A. Gladstone, one of their number.
