Gladstone, Oregon is a small town located in northern Oregon. The town was founded in 1892 by entrepreneur Orson Welles Gladstone and his family. The town became a census-designated place (CDP) in 2000. Gladstone is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Gladstone was called Horseshoe Bend, which was located on the confluence of the Cascades and Snake Rivers. After Orson Welles Gladstone bought land here in 1892, he named the community after himself, gladstonia, a naturalized American woman who had been born in Scotland to British parents and immigrated to the United States when she was just sixteen years old. At first, only male pioneers lived here; later families arrived including women and children. In 1916, Businessman Harry Stryker settled there with his family after moving from Fort Worth, Texas following World War I. Mr. Stryker started an engineering firm that designed bridges and dams across rivers and streams throughout Oregon and Washington state before disbanding it many years later because of economic difficulties during the Great Depression era. He is also famous for being one of two people convicted of treason for mailing anti-fascist leaflets through mailboxes at 11pm on May 4th., 1955 while protesting UPI’s manipulation of news events during the California Revolution that same year Girdwood farmers formed their own Agricultural Society on April 20th., 1893 soon followed by industries such as sawmillinery as well as flour milling providing jobs for local residents until 1930 when electric lights were introduced to this part of Tillamook County In 1903 Girdwood had three churches with services held twice a week at different locations: First Presbyterian Church – Carpenter Street building #2; Second Presbyterian Church – 5 miles east west between US 97 & highway 101; Third Methodist Episcopal Church – 3 miles south east between US 97 & highway 101 In 1910 Girdwood boasted twenty four businesses employing over sixty people including five banks offering loans totaling $5 million dollars Another industry beginning to take hold here early on was lumber production becoming so successful that mills were built not far from Girdwood—the biggest one built being “Oregon Lumber Company”(now known as Lewis Printing). With its main plant off Highway 99 near Whatcom Lake it exported logs all over North America until 1971 when logging stopped completely due to environmental concerns
Gladstone was founded in 1855 by George and Anna Gladstone. The town was named after the British Prime Minister, William Gladstone. The Gladstones were pioneers in the area and built a sawmill, school and other businesses. They also developed a strong agricultural industry. In 1915, the town had a population of just under 100 people. Itatted growth until World War II when it shrunk to its current size due to wartime restrictions on agriculture. The town experienced significant growth during the postwar period with the arrival of new residents and development of local industries such as paper manufacturing, shipbuilding and aluminum production. In the late 1960s, there was a decline in agricultural activity but recent growth has again brought about increased development in these sectors.
