The Gladstone Army National Guard was organized on November 15, 1907. The first unit in the Oregon National Guard was organized as Company A of the 116th Infantry Regiment on December 3, 1907. On July 1, 1908, the regiment was redesignated as Company E of the 120th Infantry Regiment and activated at Fort Boise on October 28. The regiment left for duty in Mexico City on November 16 and arrived there December 6. After brief duty at Chapultepec Barracks, the regiment embarked for Tehuantepec on February 19, 1909 and disembarked at Puebla January 25. After a period of rest and training at San Fernando de la Mesa Campground near Glendale, California from April to June 1909-the regiment moved to Anza Borrego Springs where it relieved the 24th Infantry Regiment February 9 1910 After an assignment with duty at Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco Barracks September 1910 until May 1912 when it returned to Portland following maneuvers in Seattle Washington On October 7 1912 company E was reactivated in Gladstone Oregon by order of Colonel John Wickersham commanding 2nd Brigade Federal Artillery District The battalion left Portland for Los Angeles County CA on November 8 1912 via El Paso TX then completed its journey across country by way of Albuquerque NM arriving back at Gladstone December 17 1912 after 10 months deployment Company I (3rd Battalion) remained inactive from 1919 until 1923 when it was reactivated as Headquarters Co., 117th Infantry Regt In 1927 company I (1st Battalion) reorganized into two companies each served under 1st Lt. Col Charles Hodge who became Commanding General of all Troops Statewide 1924-1927 The brigade deployed once again during World War II being mobilized August 1939-May 1940 Following mobilization company I (1st Battalion) landed in Franceon D Day June 6 1940 located between Caen and Calais area then relieved 499th Field Artillery RE battery which had been ashore since landing During advance through Normandy area were involved numerous engagements support convoy movement up river bridges demolition detachments assigned to concentration areas such as Falaise airfield conjunction with US Seventh Army soon coming under command 5th Armoured Division taking part in battle against German forces deep inside Germany complex operations including crossing Rhine river

The name Gladstone is most associated with the town in Oregon which was founded by John C. Gladstone in 1853. The townsite straddles the Willamette River and was first settled by farmers, miners, and lumbermen. The railroad arrived in the late 1800s and changed everything for the people of Gladstone. When the railroad came through town, it created new jobs and brought new life to what had been a largely inactive community. Gladstone was born in 1823 in Scotland and emigrated to America at age eighteen. He worked his way up through the ranks of American businesses including owning a ferry company before becoming an entrepreneur himself when he opened an oil refinery on Clackamas River near Portland in 1851. In 1868 he donated land to build what would become Gladstone Cemetery which remains one of Oregon’s most important landmarks today. Gladstonians are proud of their history and culture which has been passed down from their ancestors since settlement days. Some notable features include: homegrown hops production; cultural celebration events such as Oktoberfest; large Angus beef cattle ranchers who continue to provide milk for local grocery stores; traditional dress styles including kilts and tartans; statewide identity song (known as “Oregon Halt”); agricultural festivals such as Christmas Day Roundup; Bicentennial Celebrations throughout the year.; annual “Festival at Home” chili cook-off organized by Chamber of Commerce volunteers.; active support for local organizations including Boys & Girls Clubs, Democratic Party activism, Jewish Community Center….and more!
