Forest Grove is a town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Forest Grove is one of the few remaining communities in Oregon founded by Mormons and their families during the early 1800s. The community was named for General George A. Custer and his regiment that fought against the Ulysses S. Grant army at the Battle of Little Bighorn on July 25, 1876. The first white people to live in Forest Grove were Mormons who came from Utah Valley in 1853. They built a cabin near what is now SW 6th Avenue and SW I-5 highway in 1857 while they were waiting for a group of settlers to come through their territory and claim it as theirs. In 1861, Mormon pioneers John Davenport and wife Ann came to Forest Grove from Independence, Missouri with twelve children and set up a farm four miles east of where present day NW 5th Street meets I-5 highway (now SE 2nd Avenue). On February 17 th 1863 they had another child when Sarah Ann Davenport became pregnant with her husband's brother Joseph Fenton's baby. By 1865 all but two of the original Mormon pioneers had died from disease or accidents within five years after moving into this new land – an event which has been called "the great forest fire" because so many homes were destroyed by incendiary fires that burned for weeks afterwards. As Fortnight went on no more settlers showed up so either there wasn't enough land available or someone got killed trying to cross Indian country so maybe hostile Indians caused those initial outages? Anyway back around 1870 some other LDS family moved into what is today SW 3rd Ave NE and started naming their house Cedarwood after members visited there once each year on winter Sabbathdays (and Springtime if there was such thing then). Cedarwood would remain until 1906 when it was sold to Lillie Mae Christensen who moved it across I-405 to its current location just south of NW 10th Ave NE where she raised chickens until her death in 1990; it currently stands vacant although attempts have been made over time to convert it into housing or use it as a parkland feature.– [1] It wasn't until 1884 when Forrestgrove got its first post office when mail arrived three times weekly from Salem via stagecoach service along OR 131A northbound about 20 miles northwest then eastbound about 30 miles southwest stopping at Willamette Falls before continuing on downriver past Corvallis Junction then Auburn before arriving at Oregon City four days later.– [2] In 1898 Forrestgrove voted against annexing Yamhill County adding 522 residents making it one of only six towns in Multnomah County not annexed.-- [3] After World War II most residents left due to droughts which affected almost every county west of Eugene but some decided to stay including Forrestgrove which regained city status in 1957.-- [4] In 1965 ForrestGrove voters approved Measure 97 establishing a school district that covers all unincorporated areas inside city limits.– [5] In 1969–1970 ForestGrove voters passed Measure 1 authorizing annexation by Portland creating much concern among some citizens since most property owners still resided inside city boundaries.- [6][7] In 1971–1972 Measure 2 authorized annexation by Hillsboro creating even more concerns since much property remained within city limits.–[8][9][10][11][12][13], however after public hearings both measures were repealed without any vote being taken because no clear majority existed.–[14], finallyMeasure 153 authorized annexation by Beaverton creating much excitement since many property owners still reside within city boundaries.- When completed Beaverton had 375 residents while Forest Groway had 927 residents
In 1827, Forest Grove was founded by James Eastman and his brother David Eastman. The brothers were farmers who also built a gristmill and stockade on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1835, they opened a store in what is now downtown Forest Grove. The store was the first business in Forest Grove and it became an important part of the community. The town developed around the store until it closed its doors in 1951. Downtown Forest Grove experienced significant growth during World War II because of the military base that was located there. The town also experienced rapid growth after Interstate 5 was constructed through the area in 1964. Downtown Forest Grove has since declined as its population has decreased and development has moved away from the district. However, some businesses still operate in downtown Forest Grove including A&W Brewery, which is one of Oregon's smallest breweries, and KFC restaurant, which is one of oldest restaurants in Oregon.
