It was founded in 1877 by James WIllis and his wife Anna Gunnison as a small logging community on the banks of the Willamette River. The name "Forest Grove" originated from an old Native American word meaning 'the forest near where we are now,' and it stuck. In 1916, Forest Grove became one of the first towns in Oregon to be incorporated as a city. Growth continued until the late 20th century when logging came to an end and milling halted due to low demand for lumber in Oregon. In 2000, Forest Grove amalgamated with nearby La Vergne to form a new municipality which has since grown even more rapidly with annexations from other municipalities including Beaverton and Hillsboro. The history of Forest Grove can be traced back over 100 years beginning with James Willis who settled there in 1877 along with his wife Anna Gunnison after experiencing great success logging timber on their previous property near present day Bend (at that time known as North Bend). Willis named his new community after himself - "Forest Grove." Eventually many other settlers followed suit and soon ForestGrove had become one of the most heavily populated communities along the Willamette River Valley. It wasn't long before mills started operating within range of what would become today's town limits – gristmills for flour, sawmills for wood, cheese factories and breweries all sprang up around this early pioneer settlement! Despite this busy trade environment much mining took place too; gold was discovered at Gold Hill in 1892 while silver was found at Sunnyside prospectors operated out of what is now known as Eastgate Shopping Center during this time period. However these days only a few remnants remain from those earlier times: Agrarian Village now stands testament to how thriving this early settlement must have been when so much activity took place right next door! The growth of Fort George Industrial Park began taking hold within minutes of incorporation into City Limits back in 1916 when two companies – Pioneer Mills & Paperie Company and Jugular Manufacturing Company – both agreed to build an industrial park adjacent to their current sites just east of downtown FGRP today! This massive venture provided vast amounts Of jobs throughout its lifespan including construction workers employed on such projects as damming the Willamette River; grading streets, constructing parks etc… Today Fort George Industrial Park still boasts some pretty impressive facilities dating back to that fateful day thanks largely to our hardworking citizens!
