Forest Grove was founded in 1847 by Myron C. Hall and his family. The town was originally called Oregon City, but was renamed in honor of General George Washington during the U.S.–Canada War of 1812. Forest Grove became a census-designated place (CDP) on July 1, 1975. The population of Forest Grove is over 100,000 people and it is the most populous city in Clackamas County. Forest Grove's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, services, and retail trade. The community began as a small village located along the bank of the Willamette River at what is now milepost 1308 on Interstate 5 South. In 1847, Myron Hall and his family purchased 3 acres (1 km2) of land that included present-day Forest Grove from David Sibley for $100 cash only. They built a small cabin and started farming their new land with horses and cows. In 1850, Hall married Catharine Ayerbach and began to build a larger home nearby which still stands today as the Towne House Museum.(Estate No.: 6762). By 1861, forestgrove had developed into a large rural town with an estimated population of 150 people according to one source.(Fowler). By 1865, there were 350 people living in Forest Grove.(Goudreau). It wasn't until 1888 when Forrest Gump opened his first store in downtown Forest Grove that commercial development really began to take off.(Kirkpatrick & McGee). In 1915 Forrest Gump built another store across from MAX station which still stands today.(Hancock)(Kirkpatrick & McGee). In 1922 Forrest Gump opened his second store in what is now Macy’s department store(Goudreau)(Fowler)). That same year saw the opening of Oregon’s first electric streetcar line between downtown Portland and Southeast Portland((Oregon Historical Society)). Because of this early growth within the community, Forrest Gump soon became known as “the father of forest grove”(Kirkpatrick & McGee). And although he closed his stores several times throughout its history due to economic struggles(Fowler), he always managed to keep pace with changing needs within the community(Goudreau). By 1954 only 10 percent of all groceries sold in Oregon were bought online((Oregon Historical Society)) so Forrest Gump decided it would be wise to open his own warehouse instead which ultimately led to him being successful for many years thereafter.(Hancock)(Kirkpatrick & McGee). At some point during its history Forrest Grumps warehouses produced more than half the world’s supply Of permanent green plastic Christmas ornaments(*Dates: 1946 -present)(Oregon Historical Society)). In 1984 Forrest Grumps assets totaled $225 million(*Dates: 1984 -present)(Oregon Historical Society)).
