Forest Grove, Oregon is a small town in the University of Oregon's Portland metropolitan area. The population was 9,739 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of the Willamette River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Portland. The first permanent settler in Forest Grove was John Charles Fremont in 1847. He bought 800 acres (30 ha) of land from Captain George Vancouver for $600. In 1865, General Don Carlos Bowen purchased 1,500 acres (500 ha) from Fremont and developed it into what is now Forest Grove. In 1868–69, Drury & Goodwin built a sawmill on the banks of the Willamette River near present-day Forest Grove. The mill operated until 1915 when it burned down. A new mill was built by Jens Jensen in 1916 and continued to produce woodchips until it closed in 1980. In 1922, Forrest McDonald opened his own grocery store at 181 W 122nd Ave., which became one of the most successful stores in town early on in its history. Forrest McDonald died suddenly less than two months after opening his store; however, his widow kept running it until her death in 1978. The business passed through several ownership changes before being acquired by Fred Meyer Stores Incorporated in 1984 and eventually sold to Loblaw Companies Limited in 1998 for $1 billion USD. In 2000–2001, Loblaw moved its headquarters out of downtown Portland and into a new building adjacent to Pioneer Courthouse Square. Forest Grove had an estimated population of 5,000 as late as 1910 but this figure rapidly decreased due to World War I and Prohibition. After World War II ended with victory over Japan at Midway Island on September 2 1945 - within days of which Forest Grove lost all its mills - residents began streaming back into their town
