It was founded in 1847 by General David Silliman and his family as an agricultural community on the edge of a forest near present-day Columbia River Gorge. The name "Forest Grove" appears to be derived from the word for "forest floor" or "a thicket of trees." The first mention of Forest Grove in Oregon record occurs in 1846 when Elijah Porter wrote about his visit to the area and described it as consisting of "a few scattered houses, a small mill [and] some fields]." At that time there were no roads into or out of the area and Native Americans were also living in and around present-day Forest Grove. A post office called Forest Grove was established in 1847; however, it did not take hold until 1850 because no one wanted to send mail through Indian Territory. In early 1847, General David Silliman arrived in Oregon from Kansas with his family to homestead what would later become Forest Grove on land he had purchased from the local indigenous people. With only fiveable acres (2 km²), Silliman began building what would eventually become one of Oregon's most important towns – Forest Grove – on December 15,1847. Silliman employed forty men to build house after house outfitted with logs nailed together with thorns so they could not be moved and would not rot away like other buildings then being erected throughout Oregon at that time. By May 1st,1848 both home builder George Stephenson and postmaster Elijah Porter had reported that their homes had been completed - meaning that all thirtyfive residents of Forest Grove had now housing! This demonstrates how much focus Silliman placed on providing quality public infrastructure for his new town which quickly became known as one of the best places to live in America due to its natural resources – including forests! soon after the incorporation of ForestGrove into Clatsop County on January 25th 1850 everyone started receiving their mail via horseback ride from Columbia River Gorge over Chief Joseph's Lighthouse just east acrossLower Willamette River from where riverboats delivered goods downriver for market during winter months………. june 10th 1860 saw first train arrive through Orgate Canyon southbound(northbound coming upriver)from Eugene
