Forest Grove is a city in Clark County, Oregon, United States. The population was 26,055 at the 2010 census. Forest Grove is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Forest Grove were farmers and their families who came to the area in 1857 from Illinois. In 1870, a post office was established here and by 1875, the town had grown to include a railroad depot and small stores. A school was built in 1876 and by 1889, Forest Grove had an estimated population of 100 people. From its early days as a Quiet Village until it became an Urban Area in 1965 with over 30,000 residents, Forest Grove took many different forms but always managed to maintain its sense of community identity through its festivals and events that bring together people from all walks of life for fun and learning. The 2007-2008 season saw some significant changes with the opening of Providence Park which anchored much of downtown retail activity that had been going on for years without interruption or new development - giving observers their first real glimpse into how urban sprawl might play out in this increasingly dense environment outside MAX trains/trucks & buses! Forest Grove, Oregon is a small town located in the Sawtooth National Forest in western Oregon. The community was founded by George Engelbrecht on December 6, 1868, as a logging camp on the banks of the Willamette River. The name Forest Grove was chosen to honor General John A. Fuller, who led an expedition to explore and map the Northwest in 1855-1856. In 1863, Forest Grove became the first post office in Sawtooth National Forest. The local sawmill began operating in 1865 and continue until 1943. The community experienced growth during World War II when the United States military established Camp Elliott near present-day Forest Grove for soldiers stationed at Fort Lewis and other military locations within Sawtooth National Forest. After the war ended, Camp Elliott reverted to its original purpose as a civilian camp before being closed down in 1957. However, it reopened as a museum in 1984 after being vacated by the U.S Army for several years. In recent decades, Forest Grove has experienced significant redevelopment including construction of a new elementary school (1946), a new park (1976), and an expansion of Interstate 5 through the town (2008). Additionally, forestland adjacent to town has been leased for commercial purposes such as timber production and retail development such as an outdoor clothing store and gas station/convenience store. Despite these successes, progress towards developing more comprehensive plans for future development has been slow due to lack of funding or coordination between various city entities involved with forests within Sawtooth National Park boundary.
