In 1906, Forest Grove merged with Salem and Portland to form a new city, which remained its primary economic and political center until 1967 when it merged with Eugene to become the third largest city in Oregon. The history of Forest Grove can be traced back to 1846 when Europeans arrived in what is now Oregon from Europe. They had come to trade goods with the Native American peoples who lived along the riverbanks. One of these traders was John Curnow, who built a trading post called Groveland on land that he own
Forest Grove is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located in the Portland metropolitan area. The population was 24,397 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem–Keizer–Deschutes Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Forest Grove were French fur traders and missionaries in 1796, who named it "Fort Hood" after General George Washington's Army camped nearby that year on Mount Hood. The town began as a post office called "Hood" on July 8, 1839, when it was established by order of Governor Isaac Stevens following Jefferson County's admission into Oregon Territory. In 1847, John Sutter arrived in Oregon from California with his family and founded Sutter's Fort near present-day Forest Grove. After years of struggles with Indians and bitter competition from other pioneers, Sutter turned his fort over to the United States government in 1849 and ceded most of what is now Oregon to America; forest land remains undeveloped within Oregon today because of this concession. Oregon State College (OSC) was established at what is now Forest Grove in 1920 as an agricultural school under control of the Department of Agriculture; it became OSU in 1945 when OSC merged with Lane Agricultural College (now Southern Oregon University). In 1951, OSC moved to its current location adjacent to PSU campus across Northwest 5th Avenue from downtown Portland. In 1970 and 1976, OSC merged with Multnomah County Technical School (MCTS), then known as Willamette Valley Technical College (WVTC). In 1995 MCTS closed its doors while still under federal ownership due to budget cuts but reopened asPortland Community & Technical College chapels/schools serving students pre-K through 12th grade which has continued since then; PCTC currently enrolls more than 2600 students full time including online students Oregon Health Science Center opened at what is now PSU campus in 1984 as one component of enlarged hospital complex which also included Pacific Northwest Medical Center (PNWC), Portland Infirmary (Pine Street Hospital), Providence Health Care Clinic - Northwest (Providence Northridge Hospital), Roseburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center - Southwest (Roseburg Regional Hospital) and St Joseph’s Healthcare System - Northeast corner cluster which also included Tri-County Hospital District No 1 & 2 from Clackamas County
