The Forest Grove Army Post Office was established in 1892, and served as the military garrison for the town until 1913. The post office operated as an information center for the military during World War I and II, and also served as a depot for supplies to the army. In 1945, the post office was closed due to lack of customers. However, it reopened in 1946 as an ammunition shop. In 1994, the post office became an annex to Oregon State University. In 2002, it became a branch of Multnomah County library. As of 2013, the post office is no longer open to postal customers. In 1892, Forest Grove was incorporation by vote of its citizens. The first postmaster was James Aitkenberry; he resigned in 1893 after one year because he did not have a mail truck). In 1907-1908 there were two USArmy generals stationed in Forest Grove: General John Chauncey Bean and General George Armstrong Custer (the last Ulysses S Grant's cavalry general). On February 15th 1915 Field Marshal Douglas Haig stopped at Forest Grove on his way from Portland to Vancouver BC when he camped out near present day Wilsonville while supplies were being brought overland from Salt Lake City via wagon train; this event is often considered to be the beginning of World War I. The First Sergeant at Camp Forrest who reported this event was James Wurst who later wrote a book about it called "A Civilian’s Record Of World War I". On July 1st 1916 German forces attacked Fort Sumter with raiding parties consisting mostly of North American Indians led by Sitting Bull but they were repulsed with heavy losses with only 3 killed outright including Sitting Bull himself This event is often considered part of America's entry into World War I which began on April 6th 1914 with Germany Declaration Of Independence .
