Eugene, Oregon's National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early days of the United States. The Eugene National Guard was organized on April 18, 1861 as a volunteer militia to protect citizens and property in the city of Eugene. In 1865, the Eugene National Guard was disbanded due to budget cuts. However, in 1967, the City of Eugene decided to reactivate its old guard organization and became one of only two cities in the United States with an active national guard unit. The other city is Arlington, Virginia. The City of Eugene's old guard organization began as a Volunteer Militia on April 18th 1861 under command of Captain John Waddell. In 1865 Captain Waddell retired from service after his unit failed to maintain order during a march through downtown Eugene which raised public attention and led to increased funding for the militia program. On May 15th 1870 while still members of Captain Waddell's unit we formed Company A (5th Regiment) at Douglas Park located on 3rd Avenue South in downtown Eugene. The company motto "Fuerunt omnes" means "They have all joined together."
