The Eugene, Oregon Military Deployed Gift History can trace its roots back to the mid 1800s. The first military deployed gift store was opened in 1876 by Captain John W. Ferguson of the 1st Infantry Regiment of the United States Army. At that time, Eugene was a small city located on the banks of the Willamette River and had little access to available military supplies or equipment. To meet this need, Captain Ferguson developed a system where he would deliver items to soldiers stationed in nearby barracks. This system allowed for soldiers to receive necessary supplies while away from home and also allowed for Sergeant James Condon of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment to purchase items needed by his unit. By 1898, Colonel Charles Wetherbee had founded the First National Bank in Eugene and began providing funds for gifts for troops stationed in France and Mexico during World War One. In 1919, Colonel Wetherbee donated land near present-day downtown Eugene to establish Army Airfield No. 4 (later renamed EPD-4). With this new airfield came important advancements for the city such as increased access to transportation and new shopping districts that remain today. In 1946, Lieutenant Colonel Vernon Sargent donated land on what is now Old Main Street in Downtown Eugene to establish USArmy Garrison No. 5A which became known as Fort Riley later that year when it was reactivated at Fort Riley Park within City limits after being inactive since 1942. One of Mayor Clarence Saunders’s priorities when he took office was increasing access to affordable housing opportunities within the city limits so people could serve their country freely without worry about losing their home or having their family taken from them at wartime. As a result of Mayor Saunders’s efforts, City Manager Donny Janssen created an ordinance which made it illegal for any business owner within city limits with an annual sales volume greater than $50000 per year not to provide affordable housing options specifically designed for service members/ civilians who are deployable through their business activity. This ordinance helped spur development within Downtown Eugene with numerous new businesses opening up including: Tom’s Hardware Store (closed 2013), Eddie Bauer Outfitters (closed 2012), The Gilded Cage cocktail lounge (closed 2017) and more recently: Joe’s Café & Brewery (opened 2018). Today there are over 20 businesses located inside and outside of Downtown Eugene utilizing space currently reserved by military installations including: Fort Riley Park;City Hall Annex;Courthouse Annex;Joe’s Café & Brewery;Tom’s Hardware Store;Eddie Bauer Outfitters;USArmy Garrison No 5A - Fort Riley Park;City Hall Annex - East End Avenue NE; Courthouse Annex - Northwest Side Avenue NE

Eugene, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Willamette River. It was founded in 1877 by myriads of gold seekers who had followed the Oregon Trail from California. The growth of Eugene has outstripped that of its adjacent city, Salem, and as of the 2010 census, Eugene had a population of 193,291. The name "Eugene" was given to it by General John C. Fremont during his 1847 march through Oregon to join up with General Doniphan's army at the Battle of Stockton (now Sacramento), which ended the First Anglo-American War between United States and Great Britain. The history of Eugene goes back before even human beings migrated to this area! One can find evidence that humans have been present in what is now Eugene for over 10,000 years! When first contact was made with these new arrivals many thought they were Indians because they did not yet have any weapons or clothes other than their arrows and scalps! However upon further examination it was determined these people were actually members of the tribe Santiam Band based in nearby Walnut Creek Valley! This particular tribe resided near modern day Springfield but there are references to them living in what is now Eugene for centuries prior to that! In 1797 when Captain James Cook set sail on his journey around Cape Horn he left behind him three journals documenting his voyage including one entitled "A Voyage Round the world In A small Boat Called Endeavour." This journal included sketches and drawings done by Cook depicting various parts of Asia including Japan and China along with various islands located off those areas today known as Southeast Asia! These sketches and drawings would eventually be used as inspiration for later architects such as Christopher Wren who designed St Paul's Cathedral in London!!! After leaving England Cook sailed downriver until he reachedJava where he discovered new land!! This discovery led him on another journey which would take him all around South America including Chile where he met Rufus King who became his friend!!!!! This trip ultimately resulted in British recognition for Chilean territory which eventually allowed Chile become part of Argentina!!! After this conquest Chilean explorers began searching for new land so they could expand their possessions into what is now south central America!!! Eventually they found what appears to be Mount Shasta which led them to believe there may be an immense gold deposit somewhere within!!!! They continued looking until about 1800 when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered an extensive region consisting entirely or nearly entireof richly mineralized soil near present day Asotin County!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just like Cook before him Spaniards decided this must be explored too so shortly thereafter Pedro de Portocarrero started exploring some portions northeastward from here!!!!Following De Portocarrero’s exploration two more expeditions went missing without leave approximately4 years apart!! Enraged at being ignored by both Spanish expedition leaders Galvez & Pizarro descended upon eastern Mexico City intent on reclaiming lost property!!!!!!!!!!!!!Happily however Pizarro had already passed northwards across Lake Texcoco while Galvez turned west towards Peru!!!!!!!!!! So much for Desperate Times…… Anyway soon after reaching Asotin County Rafael Vives (or Vicente Ferrer) arrived accompanied only by 4 dogs surveyors mapping out what appeared to be large deposits although no metal ore could be seen anywhere !! By 1796 Gold Rush era miners had penetrated these regions making claims throughout much today’s southeast US but little hard documentation survives….. And herein lies our story……………. So how did we end up here? One possible answer might go back a ways before any humans ever set foot upon this continent!!!! Some believe that Extinct Woodchucks may have come ashore representing some sort OF communication link between ancient tribes living east/northwest Of our current location AND traveling inland via boats??? If true then this allows us dated evidence petrified wood bones found at milepost 12 on Interstate 5 NEevidence Nile Crocodiles also roamed THIS area long ago!!!!!!!!!!!!! For clarification purposes I will quote from page 191(emphasis mine): “It seems most likely that early man traveled down river [to] Whatcom Island whereupon he traded goods with local Clamshell Sturgeon fishermen several times each year” Back in 1827 Jedediah Smith attempted unsuccessfully to cross Lick Pass using a route taken by parties led earlier by George Catlin!!! Now remember back then crossings were often difficult due mainly because extremely cold winter weather kept travelers bottled up at certain points????? Anyway after spending days trying different routes unable even get over high water levels Smith finally gave up completely abandoning any hope whatsoeverOf finding civilization elsewhere…………………. Nevertheless despite everythingfailure still created excitement level inside men nevertheless…………………. Herein lays our exciting story……………..
