Eugene, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Cowlitz County. The population was 103,786 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Douglas County. Eugene is also home to Willamette University,Oregon State University and its adjacent campus area known as the Angelina Jolie Campus. Eugene is situated on both sides of the Willamette River and near its confluence withthe Columbia River. The name Eugene first appeared on a map in 1847 when Captain George Vancouver explored what is now Douglas County. He named it after Prince Eugenius of Württemberg, who had visited America in 1795 and recommended that British colonists located in what is now Oregon raise their families there because of the excellent education available here. When gold was discovered nearby in 1851, people from all over started coming to explore this new land. In 1862 Governor John Kapp appointed Hyrum Hitchcock as administrator for Douglas County because he thought there might be gold hidden under the earths surface hereabouts. Hitchcock believed in hard work and did not let fortune take control of his life so he built several mills that process lead ore until 1875 when he decided to sell these mills to Aged Seed Company which became Willamette National Corporation later renamed Monsanto Co., Incorporation No: 8-41602 (in 1977). At this time much of downtown Eugene was still unbuilt due to financing difficulties which continued into the early years of Eugene’s growth when most people were farmers or miners rather than urbanites looking for an interesting place to live and work outside their homes In 1916-1917 two brothers by the name of Harold Smedley built a large flour mill just east of downtown on what is now Old Mill Road near High Bridge Road This mill processed flour from ore mined around town including some found south on Highway 101 near Killingsworth Damsite where gold had been found about sixty miles distant from Eugene The Smedleys are buried at Mount Hood Cemetery southwest side lot #311 . Harold Smedley died young at age 42 years old while working at his mill which left his widow Hazel running it until her death aged 78 years old in 1961 . After her death Hazel’s son David took over running it until 1978 when he sold it to Adolphus Busch as part of their purchase of International Harvester Of America company whose head office was then located along Broadway between Main Street South & Pennsylvania Avenue North In 1978 busch moved his headquarters back across Broadway from Main Street South intoOld Mill Road building currently used by Ecolab Incorporated since 1984 as partofthe US Department Of Energy's Office Of Technology Transfer In 1980 local resident Rick Neumann bought Old Mill Road property north side lot #308 from Adolphus Busch who had been using that parcel for storage during construction OF THE NEW BUSCH MALL IN EMINENT NEVADA CITYRick Neumann has kept ownership & use rights to Old Mill Road property ever since making this gesture OF INTENTION TO PRESERVE AN INTERESTING LOCAL HERITAGE
The Marine Corps is a land-based military service that has been in existence since 1775. The Marine Corps' official history began with the creation of the Continental Marines on June 20, 1775. The Continental Marines were formed to provide defense against British forces during the American Revolution. The Marine Corps was first established as an infantry regiment and then became a marine battalion in 1802. In 1860, the Marine Regiment became part of the newly created United States Marines and served in Cuba before being transferred to Japan in 1945. After World War II, the Marine Corps grew rapidly and by 1972 had over 1 million enlisted members. In 1980, President Ronald Reagan directed that all Marines be given standard issue rifles, grenades, and armor piercing rounds for use in combat. This change allowed marines to fight on two fronts at once and made them more effective combatants against hostile forces abroad. Since then, more than 150 thousand marines have served in various roles within the Marine Corps including amphibious assault troops (the Special Purpose unit), airmobile units (the Attack Helicopter Squadron One Hundred thirty two), artillerymen (the Missile Battalion Two Hundred Fifty Four), intelligence support personnel (the Commandant’s Intelligence Section), engineers (the Combat Engineer Battalion Two Hundred Thirty Six) and special operations forces elements such as commandos (Marine Air Wing Three hundred fifty one). As part of their global deployment program, marines frequently participate in multinational exercises known as Jumping out Junction or JUMPEX which helps maintain international peace and security through deployments outside of US shores.
