The first Europeans to visit what is now Eugene were Jesuit missionaries on horseback in 1792–93. They named the area Canoe Bay after nearby Canoe Lake because they thought that it would be a good place to landing supplies for their missionary work on the Columbia River. A French trader, La Salle had earlier explored this region and named it Point George due to an observation point he had made on an island in Canoe Bay. In 1810, Daniel Webster founded Fort Washington here as part of efforts by United States policymakers to secure access to Puget Sound from Great Britain during the War of 1812. In 1817, Congress created Lane County, including present-day Eugene and Springfield counties, based on land awarded by President James Kapp as part of Treaty 4 between Mexico and America following their war with Spain over California’s Mexican borderlands In 1840−41,[2] farmers living near Whatcom River began irrigating cereal crops using water extracted from Springwater Creek south of modern day Eugene; this led to development around what is now downtown Eugene along Willamette Boulevard from Jackson Park northward starting about 1850[3][4][5] As early as 1830–31,[6][7] residents near South Water Street (later renamed Broadway) east of downtown started growing fruit trees orchards which became known as Fruitland Gables before being razed during World War II due to bombing damage[8]. These earliest Orchard Grove developments can still be seen looking down Broadway towards Willamette Boulevard today…. Most people who lived there then never went any further than just walking out their front door; much later streetcars brought people into central business districts like Downtown Eugene through streets like 5th Avenue… most commercial institutions—including banks—were established closer to riverfront rather than center town because transportation was inadequate then and riverfront sites were more accessible from streetcar lines running along either side of busy bridges across rivers such as [the Willamette],ocketties ran parallel but several blocks away providing quick connections between different parts of town without going down narrower streets By 1870,[9][10] many brick blocks built throughout central business district have been preserved thanks to efforts by local citizens who cleared brush off rights-of-way;[11],[12][13] examples include State Capitol Building (1875), First National Bank (1887), Palace Theater (1904), Masonic Temple No 1 (1906), Lyman Beecher Library Annexe 1910–1991 (now University District Museum), Pioneer School building 1912–1978(now Christ Lutheran Church – Main Campus)[14][15], The Josephine Institute 1915–1996 inside current Superior Court building[16], Harmonie Hall 1916/1997 inside old City Hall annexe next door since 2003[17]), University District Museum 1907–1991 inside current Courthouse Annexe opposite original Courthouse Annexe where former Federal Building stood until 1953[18],and finally new Courthouse Annexe2001 adjacent Old Courthouse annexes easternmost corner MARGINAL STREET NEAR UNIVERSITY DISTRICT MUSEUM Since World War II some important buildings associated with Central Oregon history have also been constructed: Wapato Dam 1945,[19](Wapato Hydroelectric Plant 1976), Multnomah County jail 1951,[20](Multnomah Falls jail 1997) and Eastern Oregon Community College 1962.[21](EOCL campus 1996). The first European to visit what is now Eugene was Juan Rodríguez de Fuca on March 24, 1797 while exploring British Columbia. He named it after General Manuel Antonio de Crozat y López-Mármol y Mendoza who had been commanding an expedition against Spanish missionaries near modern day Santa Cruz, California. The Spanish were looking for a way to circumnavigate North America and reach Spain before their ships ran out of water or food supply. In 1847, George Simpson founded what would become Pioneer Village as part of his Donation Land Claim Act settlement which went into effect on February 14th that year. In 1853, due to an overpopulation issue caused by gold rushes throughout Oregon and Nevada, Lane County was split into two parts - Lane County (later Curry) and Douglas County (later Josephine). Eugene became part of Douglas County on November 16th, 1855 when it was organized from parts of Lane and Polk counties following a referendum vote by the people of those counties. At that time Orval Coleman became the first white man to permanently settle in Eugene when he moved from Jacksonville northward along Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard through muchof central Eugene until he reached Fourth Street just south of Congress Avenue on January 12th, 1886 where he established The First National Bank with Jens Jensen as president and Wm Henson as vice president On May 5th 1890 Captain William Kamey took command of US Navy's USS Olympia during her maiden voyage when she sailed from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for Portland Harbor bringing goods necessary for buildingthe new State Capitol Building which would be completed three years later On October 20th 1890 John Tuthill arrived from Sydney Australia aboard USS Success where he had chartered passage under false pretenses in order to seek mineral rights near Mount Hood After landing at Astoria Bay Tuthill immediately set about mapping streams running east-west across northernOregon then northwesterly along themathematical line drawn between Shasta Lake and Mount Bachelor thence down stream past Gold Hill northeastward towards Milford Junction whence westerly again via Harney Peak toward Medford In less than two weeks he had surveyed 80 miles (129 km) worthof country including most importantly Shasta Lake specimens hitherto unknown east OF Mount Bachelor
