Eugene, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Butte County. The population was 97,574 as of July 1, 2018. Eugene is the largest city in Oregon by population and also the second-largest city in Oregon after Portland. It lies on the Willamette River between Springfield and Beaverton and is surrounded by buttes to its south, east, and north. The first European to visit what is now Eugene was Jedediah Smith on his 1807 trip from Astoria, New York through central California crossing into what is now Oregon Territory. He named the area "Eugene" for John Eugene who had accompanied him on that journey. In 1851, Jethro Gibbs became one of only two men ever jailed for violating United States neutrality during the Mexican American War with an attack on Hispanic settlers near modern-day Eugene (Gibbs had been released soon after). The town started to form when farmers brought their herds of cattle to be slaughtered here at nearby Slaughterhouse Hill until slaughterhouses opened up in larger towns like Salem orPortland which offered better prices for beef. The townspeople were able to build their own schools and churches because there was no money available from government coffers for such things back then. The first post office opened in 1868; it was called "Butteville". In 1886, Eugene incorporated as a village under yet another name: "Olympia". That name lasted until 1903 when it changed again to "Eugene". The city's first mayor was John Day who served from 1865-1870; he is also considered the founder of Eugene Municipal Court System which provided law enforcement services for the city until 1967 when it became part of Multnomah County government
