The first Europeans to visit this valley were French traders who passed through here in 1792-93. They named it after Place d’Eugene (now part of downtown Eugene), France. In 1851 Congress created Polk County from parts of Butte and Josephine Counties and designated Eugene as its seat. The first post office was established in this community on April 20,1852. A year later water was foundpooling along what became Second Street near present day University Avenue which led to settlers moving into this locality including David Sibley and Alfred Peltier who began clearing land for farming purposes about 1840s. By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Eugene Township with just 10 buildings! The platting of streets began soon afterwards with Third Street becoming Pioneer Road! During World War II most people within walking distance worked at local munitions plants while others engaged in agricultural production or served in their local military units; however some citizens did engage locally in Nazi Germany sympathizers activities such as starting an attic store opened under license to sell goods bearing that name close to First Avenue & DeKalb Streets.). In 1945 when war ended many families decided to come back home following years of reconstruction efforts; however a few chose to stay behind where they raised families until recently when much redevelopment activity has taken place making Eugene one of most diverse communities within Polk County!
