At this writing, there is only one other roaster in town – Star Coffee. Star Coffee has been around since 1984 and started out as a small family-owned business. They roast their own beans and sell them fresh to local cafes and restaurants. In 1820, Lieutenant David McLoughlin explored the area that would become Eugene when he discovered a Sauk Trail opening up from southern California through what are now Josephine and Polk counties. In 1825, John Condon established a ranch about twelve miles east of present-day Eugene on land owned by James O'Brien. A year later, Condon & Company built a sawmill and millrace on Hell Creek which later became the central business district of downtown Eugene. Lane County was organized on November 3, 1853 under territorial government control from British Columbia when Oregon was admitted as a U.S. state On January 29th 1861, Lane County purchase land northward from McKenzie River to form its current limits The county courthouse was built in 1865 at what is now First Avenue NE corner with Couch Street NE

Eugene, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The city was founded on February 24, 1853 by Jedediah Smith and his party of pioneers as the new town of Canby. The population of Eugene had only around 100 people when it was founded and within 10 years it had grown to over 2,000 people. At its peak, Eugene was known as one of the most vibrant cities in America. It was home to several universities including the University of Oregon and OSU (Oregon State University). In 1905, Eugene became a city under statehood and has since grown into one of the largest metro areas in North America. Eugene’s history begins with Jedediah Smith who arrived in 1847 from Plaquemines Parish Louisiana to explore what lay ahead for him in this new land he found himself inhabiting. After landing at what is now Bull Run Cove on February 24th, 1853, Jedediah set about building a cabin which would become his first permanent home. From here he began trading goods with Native Americans and conducting explorations that would lead him to find Gold Rush territory in what is today central Oregon. On July 17th, 1854 Jedediah finally reached dry land where he discovered an agricultural area that would later be named Canby after him. As can be seen from this brief description, Eugene played an important role during both the Gold Rush period and following years as part of the community that developed around it such as lumbering, farming etc.. In 1861-1862 United States forces fought against Confederate forces near present day Portland while General George Custer led his Seventh Cavalry through central Oregon during their Campaign againstthe Central Plains Indians near present day Coeur d’Alenes Idaho Territory ending up south along Interstate 5 near Eugene towards Willamette River Crossing… upon reaching down into these depths they discovered vast amounts o silver! This event marks one possible source for early settlers coming westward including Jedediah Smith who may have been among those initial investors or even participated directly! The discovery soon made things very uncomfortable for both sides with two armies being assembled nearby; however due to some inspired leadership by General Custer (whose unit also happened to include many local men) things eventually calmed down before any serious fighting occurred…. However this event did inspire future leaders such as General Douglas MacArthur who would go on to fight American involvement in World War II right outside our current city limits! In 1865-1866 United States troops served under Brigadier General Lew Wallace during their expedition called “The Search For The Lost Heifer” which aimed to locating any lost herds across much of northwestern Wyoming Territories…participated were local Menominee Indian tribe members helped by Captain John Wesley Powell! This particular operation yielded many valuable items such as horse saddles and other equipment!!Later still another search took place led by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Goodyear starting out from Whatcom County California but soon moving inland overland until reaching Yellowstone National Park!!! Upon arriving at Mount Hood Iron Mountain they found not just cattle but horses too which suggests there may have been more than one successful attempt at finding thesemissing herds!! In all likelihood these searches functioned more like treasure hunts than anything else 🙂 ……………….. continued below
Eugene, Oregon was founded by George C. Smith in 1847 as the town of Happy Valley. The city was named for Eugene, the son of General George C. Smith and his wife Emily. In 1871, the city was renamed Eugene after John A. Dickson, a U.S. senator from Oregon and member of the Provisional Government that replaced the Oregon Territory when it was acquired by the United States in 1848. After Dickson's death in 1879, Eugene was again renamed to honor him; it remained so until 1907 when it reverted to its original name once more.
