These planes were flown by NASA astronauts including Neil Armstrong who flew on two flights aboard these planes before his death in 1977. Eugene was founded by Latter-day Saints in 1854 as a Mormon settlement on the Willamette River, about south of Salem. The city grew rapidly after World War II with its heavy industry and educational institutions, includingOregon State University (OSU), continued to draw people from around the country. The downtown area has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The first Europeans to visit what is now Eugene were French traders who passed through in 1697 and 1701. It may have been named for an early European explorer, Jean Baptiste de La Salle, but it is more likely that he mistook the mouth of the Willamette River for another river called Duck Creek because that's where he saw some ducks swimming in 1702 while exploring downstream from his previous expedition upriver from Portland. In 1854, LDS settlers arrived from Nauvoo, Illinois and organized into a group known as The Second Generation or "Latter-day Saints". They built their first church there on November 15th 1854–an event chronicled in a tract called "The Pioneer Address" which has been preserved as a part of local history since then: "We build this house just east of here considerations being had relative to our having land enough theretofore very limited; we do not desire any larger quantity than we can reasonably use." This statement shows that they were already thinking about ways to add housing to their fledgling town – something they would do frequently throughout their history due to increased demand due to growth in industry and education opportunities combined with ever-widening suburban areas outside Eugene proper! In 1865 when Lane County was created from parts of Multnomah County (a merger which took place January 1st 1865) Eugene became its county seat; it remains so today! This coincided with generalurbanization across most eastern Oregon such as Deschutes Falls becoming an edge city only 10 miles away instead of 100+ miles inland like it used to be thanks largely to railroads! With over 20 years experience as countyseat you could say that things really did change here quickly….sortof…..
