The Navy has a long and proud history in Dallas, Oregon. From the early days of the city when sailors manned ships to today’s naval brigade presence, the navy has always been a part of our community. In 1855, the first ship in Dallas Harbor was built by Captain George W. Smith and her crew on land at what is now known as Dock No. 1 on Mattole Street. The captain donated the ship to Portlandport Naval Station for use as a warehouse while they awaited construction of their next vessel. In 1861, during the American Civil War, USS Constitution (1862-1865) sailed into Dallas harbor from San Francisco with Marines aboard and delivered supplies and reinforcements to General Grant’s army fighting against Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House. On July 9th 1865 Constitution met up with USS Monitor (1864-1866) off shore and together they fought off an attack by Confederate warships attempting to cross into US waters. After the war ended Commodore David Farragut visited Portlandport Naval Station where he saw that the storage facility had not been used for years and offered his own donation of a battleship – CSS Georgia (1868). The city accepted this gift graciously and construction began immediately on what would become one of America’s most renown navies - CSS Georgia (1914-1945). During World War II Houston Shipbuilding Corporation produced over 500 ships for both naval service and commercial purposes alone including Enterprise (1944), Caron Bay(1946), Halsey(1948), Shiloh(1950), Coral Sea( 1942); James M merchant steamer SS Olympia which transported troopships through Japanese ports; Tacoma Lighthouse Supply Fleet Auxiliary; USS John F Kennedy Presidential Vessel; Asiatic Fleet Patrol Craft Squadron One Hundred NINE members embarked upon five submarines:SS Triton(1949); SS PuebloLivermore( 1950); Seward Special Purpose Boat Harbor Freighter SS Orcas Island Ferry Service~ Transylvania Humane Society Marine Aid Ship~ Allied Mine Countermeasures Service~ Allied Mine Countermeasures Service ~ 1945-present] In 1941 President Franklin D Roosevelt authorized development of antisubmarine warfare capabilities using destroyer escorts called Task Force 58 which includedUSS Mayflower (DD 705) “Dolphin†escorted byUSS Greylock () . On 15 December 1941 USS Mayflower split ahead of convoy SC 53 escort group led by HMS Eagle () after sighting an unidentified submarine astern Dripping Waters Reef about 350 miles east southwest Japan ().Mayflower was almost sunk but managed to return safely to port 5 days later having screened total 10 convoys totaling some 3600 tonsDuring World War II there were more than 2400 military vessels in commission with United States Navy including:- 151 destroyers- 246 sloops-[ 17 submarines]- 517 auxiliary vessels-[ 11 Landing Ships/Airfields]- 319 landing craft

The Oregon navy gift history can trace its roots back to 1885 when Rear Admiral John D. Stockton donated a small schooner, the USS Supply, to the city of Portland in order to provide naval supplies and services. The USS Supply served as a floating arsenal until 1914 when it was sold and renamed the USS Clipper. In 1928, the City of Dallas donated an engine dredger, the SS Tacoma, which served as their first navy gift. In 1941, the city of Dallas also gifted an auxiliary patrol boat called HMS Valiant toPortland’s navy. This was followed by another donation in 1944-1945 when Dallas gave three warships-the USS Lexington (AGP-3), HMAS Sydney (AO1) and HMS Melbourne (FV404)to Portland’s navy for use during World War II. The USS Melbourne was used as a flagship for Commander Task Force 8th Fleet during Operation Neptune’s Spear (1941). In 1955, two more vessels were given-the destroyer USNS Hawthorne and the minesweeper USNS Panther -to Portland's navy for use during World War II vintage torpedo operations off Hawaii. In 1957-1959, another ship -the tugboat USNS Valley Forge -was gifted to Portland's Navy for use during World War II vintage fishing operations off California. Portland also received two submarines from Japan in 1959-1960 -the Yachshuka class submarine Kureishi #2 and Tomari class submarine Hatakeyama #4-. These submarines were christenedUSS Halsey (#2) andUSS Fitzgerald (#4)in honor of Admiral Chester Nimitz who commanded Destroyer Squadron 5th Fleet at that time. From 1962 through 1966--two more ships were gifted-the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bridgeport(LPH+7)andHMS Stroud(JT8)).These Ships served as Naval Hospital Ships with Amphibious Units embarked while performing various duties such as helicopter landing/takeoff/landing support; Mine Clearance; Harbor Maintenance; Patrol Activity etc... The first wave of Europeans to arrive in Oregon were the French in 1821. The next year, the United States acquired Oregon from France. The area now known as Dallas was part of what was called the Donation Land Claim Settlement. It was land donated by Mexico to the United States in 1846.
