The Oregon National Guard was created on October 1, 1907 by the state of Oregon. The unit first served in the Spanish-American War and World War I as a militia. In 1937, the National Guard was merged with the Army Reserve to form the Oregon Army National Guard. On July 1, 1942, the Oregon National Guard became an active duty army regiment and was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Division. On September 25, 1976, 3rd Infantry Division merged with 2nd Infantry Division to form 3rd Brigade Combat Team (3/2 ID), which is now headquartered in Corvallis. Oregon’s national guard gift history goes back to 1907 when it was first organized as a militia unit. The unit served in World War I and II before being combined with the Army Reserve in 1937 to form the Oregon Army National Guard. The service arms of both units were infantry rifles until 1942 when they were consolidated into one battalion under command of an artillery regiment called “The Giffords” named for General William Bendix Gifford who had been instrumental in helping create the military within America during World War I. These weapons were turned over to the local National Guard units which then put them back into service during the war. From 1865-1868 many troops served in Mexico under General Santa Anna after US forces surrendered at Monterrey. This gave rise to the myth that gifts given to members of the National Guard during this time constituted treason against Mexico since some of these items may have been used against its government once American troops returned home
