In 1907, Portland moved its municipal government to Corvallis when it annexed much of northwestern Oregon into its city limits. The annexation created new jobs for locals in both cities, and resulted in more than $1 million in economic development over 10 years alone for Corvallis residents. Today, downtown still retains many of its Victorian-era features, such as old cotton mills and coal mines that have been preserved as part of the city's history since they closed down decades ago.
