On December 16, 1897,Corvallis became the first city in Oregon to be established with a population over 1,000 people. The population grew rapidly and by 1910 it had reached 2,500 people. In 1916-17 World War I slowed down economic growth and poverty around Portland; however for a brief time during World War I Corvallis experienced high levels of production due to its connection to Bend’s war effort (the city produced up to 20% of all military materiel). After World War I ended there was a slow but steady increase in housing prices which caused many working class citizens to move out into suburbs or outside Portland altogether; however some residents did maintainresidential property within downtown Corvallis while selling their holdings back into commercial activity during slower times

Polk announced his decision to annex all but about 10 miles (16 km) of California north of the Snake River into America along with all its citizens and land holdings east of that line. The following year saw more significant events when Gold was discovered in northern California and became an important factor in American policy towards Oregon
