Corvallis is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, located about an hour east of Portland. The town was founded in 1876 by James S. Gilmore and his wife, Anna Maria. It grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its location on the rise of the Cascade Mountains and for its access to logging and irrigation facilities. In 1916, Corvallis became one of the cities included in Portland's incorporation as a city. Today, Corvallis is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, services, retailing, and agriculture. The first permanent settlers in what is now Corvallis were fishermen who had come ashore from ships anchored at various points along the river. In 1886-87, James Gilmore built a mill which still stands today downstream from downtown Corvallis on Fifth Avenue between SW Morrison Road and SW Marine Drive (now SE Morrison Road). This mill produced flour for local consumption as well as selling flour to other towns in nearby counties including McMinnville and Salem. A few years later, Gilmore also erected a dam across the Willamette River which created Hydroelectric power for homes & businesses near PSU campus; this was followed by lights being installed throughout downtown Corvallis by 1893! In 1916 when Portland incorporated as a city it included much of rural Oregon into its boundaries; however much of westcentral Oregon remained unincorporated territory until 1959 when it was annexed into Portland proper! Prior to Portland's incorporation there were only 2 streets in downtown Corvallis – Main street extending northward from First Avenue southward while Second avenue extended eastward from First Ave unto SW Morrison Road! During World War I young men enlisted or volunteered at local military posts throughout southeast Oregon; Operation Serpent’s Claw saw many enlistees coming through town including many teenagers! As war progressed more men came home sick or injured so some industries quickly shifted towards munitions production such as shipbuilding/repair yards( such as Waddell Shipyard) whilst others turned their attention towards farming (e example: Max Brenner’s Grain Elevator) employment opportunities increased further with WWI providing workers needed skills like machine tooling etc not easily available back home with hostilities ending recruiting efforts centered around home country
