The history of gourmet coffee in Corvallis, Oregon goes back to the late 1800s. There were two small cafes in town that served high-quality coffee. One was run by a man named Jedediah Smith and the other by his son-in-law, John Aiken. The younger Aiken opened The Coffee House in 1892 and continued to serve excellent coffee until his death in 1951. The Coffee House was later sold to another family and closed down in 1957. The first gourmet coffee house was opened by Bruno Boccanegra in 1905 on First Street. He started serving Italian espresso drinks called Lungomare ( Lungs ) which were very strong and rich in flavor. His wife also ran the business together. In 1916, Harry Jourdain opened Jourdain's Coffee House on Second Avenue near State Street. It was one of the first commercial stores where people could purchase high-quality espresso drinks from professional baristas who brewed their own beans from pure Arabica beans. In 1925, Angelo Luongo reopened Luongo's Cafeteria on State Street which became one of the most popular tourist destinations for Gourmet Coffee Lovers throughout Oregon and Northwest America due to its fantastic selection of Italian coffees, pastries, wines, pasta dishes and desserts as well as its innovative menu items like Spaghetti Carbonara with Roquefort Sauce or Pasta carbonara with lobster sauce! In 1971, Luigi 'Lenny' Donatelli reopened Donatelli's Cafeteria on Third Avenue near Commercial Drive serving delicious Italian meals all day long! This restaurant is still a favorite stop for tourists today!
