Oregon was founded by several groups of people from the Northwest in 1846. The first permanent resident was Captain James K. Polk, who sailed his ship "Arrow" up the Willamette River and named it for Oregon City, which he saw while on a trip to the Pacific Northwest. A few weeks later, another group of pioneers arrived at the mouth of the Deschutes River and named it after Sir George Vancouver's HMS Discovery (1792). In 1850, Major John C. Frémont explored the region and named four rivers in this area: The Russian Fork, The North Umpqua, The South Umpqua, and The Columbia. In 1851-52 Oregon became a state when Congress approved a bill granting admission to Oregon as a free state. The following year, settlers started arriving in large numbers to what is now Corvallis. By 1860 there were over 1,000 residents living in what is now Corvallis Municipal District (CMD). Many of these early residents came from northern Michigan and Wisconsin. After years of growth and development within CMD, Corvallis officially became an incorporated city on February 14th 1865 by ordinance passed by the City Council. At that time it had a population of just under 2 hundred people! During its early years Corvallis played an important role as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and strong water resources. In 1870-71 wheat production reached its peak in CMD with more than one thousand acres planted! Later that decade cotton crops also began to be grown here but proved unsuccessful because of harsh weather conditions. However, during World War I both mustard gas and fine powder warfare were used against Japanese forces nearCorvallis; this caused great damage to local businesses! During World War II much progress was made in developing munitions manufacturing here including aluminum weapons contracts with Boeing Airlines and General Motors Corporation! However heavy casualties resulted from bombing raids during that conflict which destroyed many businesses downtown as well as other neighborhoods across town including East End Neighborhoods throughout central Corvallis. A number of new restaurants opened up throughouttown during this time period such as Carl’s Jr., Joes Grill & Ribs (later known as Joe’s Pizza), Chili’s Restaurant & Lounge (later renamed Chili’s Bistro), Zinfandel Martini Bar & Grill (later renamed Zinfandel), Reilly Bros.' Irish Pub & Grille (later renamed Reilly’s Cafe), American Legion Post No. 521/527 – home OF THE LITTLE ROCK PILOTS! And finally The Brewery – later known as Portland Brewing Company - which continued operations until 1966 when it closed down due to lack of support from local authorities!.
