The Oregon National Guard was organized on July 1, 1885. The first commander of the Oregon National Guard was Colonel George H. Smith. The organization grew rapidly and within two years there were over 1,000 guardsmen in the state. On November 5, 1888, General John C. Frémont became governor of Oregon and ordered a mobilization of all states in the Union for three months to help protect against annexation by Mexico. This emergency called for an immense influx of military personnel from across the country and led to the recruitment of many New Englanders into the guard as well as Californians and other westward moving people. On December 3rd, 1888, Governor Frémont signed Act 258 which created a national guard corps with statewide jurisdiction and responsibility for law enforcement and defense of vital interests throughout the United States including Oregon’s borders with Mexico. The first officers appointed to the new national guard were Major General John Jager (later Lieutenant General) and Captain James Wickersham (later Colonel). Oregon also recruited men from around America to serve in its militia forces during this time period; these units would become known as “the Golden State Guards” or simply “the GN” for short.

The Cornelius National Guard was a unit of the United States Army that was activated on November 12, 1917. The unit was redesignated as the Oregon National Guard on December 1, 1920. The unit disbanded on October 30, 1946.
Cornelius, Oregon is a small community located in the eastern part of the U.S., about midway between Portland and Seattle. It was named for Cornelius Vanderbilt, an American entrepreneur who amassed a fortune in railroads and shipbuilding. The town has a population of about 1,500 people, most of whom are residents of the single-story buildings along Main Street. The town's only store is operated by the PEMCO Bank, which opened its doors in 1961. The bank is one of the few remaining banks in Oregon. The other businesses in town include two convenience stores, two hair salons, and one barbershop. There are also a few churches and a museum.- Cornelius began as an agricultural settlement near what is now Union City. In 1863, Cornelius Post Office was established here with Arent Hapgood as clerk and Wmbert Fenton as treasurer. By 1865 there were six families living here; by 1878 there were twenty-six families living here.- In 1898, Cornelius voted to become a city Limits Settlement under Act 189.—At that time it was customary for towns to vote on whether they should become cities or remain villages.– In 1902 Cornelius had ninety-three citizens; by 1909 it had one hundred fifty-eight citizens.– In 1916 Cornelious annexed to Portland.–The annexation resulted from debate over land titles within the boundaries of both towns.–After annexation cornelia became known simply as "Cornelius."–In 1939 when Washington County became part of Tillamook County government all civic functions moved from downtown Cornelia to Tillamook (then known as Tillamook Heights).–In 1951 when Tillamook Countys official name changed to Multnomah County all civic functions moved back into downtown Cornelia but continued to use their old building at 501 Main Street until it burned down in 1979.–Since then new buildings have been built on Main Street but all services continue to be provided out of old facilities at 503 Main Street.-TodayCornelius provides support for local agriculture including livestock grazing operations on several thousand acres surrounding its rural setting.–It also houses various cultural events throughout year such as music festivals (most notably Jazzfest), literature readings/fundraisers/comic book signings/and art shows.–As with many small communities around the country this day-to-day life revolves around supporting its local economy through retail sales and service providers
The National Guard has a long and proud history of providing service to the United States. The Militia Act of 1792 created the National Guard in order to provide security for the American people. The Guard was initially made up of militia officers who were drafted from among farmers, mechanics, printers and soldiers in times of war. For many years, the Guardsmen were used as a source of labor in various industries such as construction, farming and manufacturing. In 1898, Congress passed the Law Revision Act which gave the National Guard powers to purchase firearms and drill for military purposes. This act also authorized member states to raise an additional 10,000 men for duty within two years. The first major mobilization of the National Guard occurred during World War I when over 120,000 men were called into service. During World War II, there was another large mobilization with over 200,000 members being called up. After World War II ended, there was a slight decrease in participation but it did not stop until 1973 when Congress passed the Defense Authorization Bill which provided $1 billion for defense spending. This legislation led to another major mobilization with almost 400 thousand members being called up for duty during Operation Neptune’s Spear which was conducted by South Vietnam against North Vietnam. Since then there have been occasional mobilizations but they have generally been smaller in size than earlier ones due to budgetary reasons or because changes in technology have made mobilized forces more difficult to mobilize successfully.

The military governor's belongings were left behind at Fort Clatsop and were auctioned off within a few weeks to pay for Kett's removal from office. The items included cannons, horses, clothes and other equipment that had been used by the military in Oregon Territory since before it became a state.
